    Grenfell Tower

I don't think there's necessarily a problem with the numbers, these are people with proven self-sufficiency. The problem is the large number who have disappeared to friends etc, often in other parts of the country for various reasons. Among those is uncertainty about their immigration status...

Not quite, they are not the expensive ones in the same block but social housing ones. They've been bought by the City of London Corporation in an HCA housing deal. The key thing is that they are in the same area as promised, particularly important for those who are employed. .

Guess the CEO of this company won' t be getting a bonus this year

I can see Mobike failing in the same way in many locations. Even the docking based systems in Paris and London have cost far more than expected and have had to be bailed out with huge sums of public money. I'm still convinced that no bike hire system can work at an acceptable cost, the public...

Longevity of electric bikes in general - A bit sceptical.

Panasonic have a long record of producing reliable e-bike motors, dating from 2000, Yamaha likewise from 1999 though theirs not always on the UK market, but always in mainland Europe. The Suzhou Bafang hub motors go back over a similar period, but earlier ones weren't consistently long lived...

I noticed that too! A case of marketing triumphing over facts. .

    ABS braking for e-bikes

I've no doubt it will work well, but at nearly a kilo in added weight and doubtless costing quite a bit, I doubt it will be a popular buy. .

    Brexit, for once some facts.

There's no risk of that happening, regardless of what the payment is for. I don't think it's a matter of integrity so much as not daring to be seen as an untrustworthy trading partner, given the huge damage that causes. Ill-effects that can rapidly follow are increases in interest on borrowing...

Longevity of electric bikes in general - A bit sceptical.

Often not enough known about the rarer higher end, fewer buyers and even fewer forum members experiencing them. Some may well be brilliant, but when there's little or no evidence in support. it's hard to recommend. Most is known about the internally geared hubs that most prefer. In theory...

Fully agreed, but as OG observed, Joe Public won't see it that way. They'll be furious at any bill after being promised £350 millions a week saving. .

Longevity of electric bikes in general - A bit sceptical.

Overall the 24 and 26 volt Panasonic crank units have had the best record for longevity. There's many of the first version still in use at up to 16 years old. However that unit did have a couple of known possible faults, so a minority failed at various ages. Their second series had those...

    IGH gears vs. derailleur

For about town utility use and commuting my preference is IGH every time, even for heavy work. I ran a Lafree with an SRAM P5 gear hub for four years hauling huge trailer loads before it failed. Then bought a new gear hub discounted for £98 and swapped the whole insert to get rolling trouble...

    Grenfell Tower

I listened to a discussion on this and it still came down in favour of a public inquiry for various reasons. An inquest will open first anyway, then adjourn for the public inquiry to proceed. The worst delaying factor will be the police criminal inquiry, since nothing can start until they've...

    IGH gears vs. derailleur

The real reason with crank motor ones is the hub gear torque limits, which with both rider and motor power through them can easily exceed the makers limit. Shimano used to make 3, 4 and 7 speed gear hubs, but the 4 speed often failed on one of the Lafree models which had the Panasonic crank...

My Croydon Council are the first London council announcing that sprinklers are to be fitted. Their 25 tower blocks over 10 storeys are all going to be equipped and £10 million has been allocated for the work. In addition fire safety inspection of all cladded buildings is proceeding. Hopefully...

And beyond, for there are projects we won't want to leave so will have to continue paying for indefinitely. And in other cases the projects have an ongoing cost to completion that we agreed to by joining in with them. Those we'll have to pay for whether we want to continue with them or not. .

    Thanks and see you later

We've the occasional recumbent trike member over the years, but recumbent bike members like D8ve are a rarity. Years ago we had member Jeremy who had one and also converted it very neatly to an e-recumbent, but he eventually departed to Endless Sphere. Photo below: .

That's no different from what I've posted about our vibrant communities, my point being that the close communication isn't necessarily between next door neighbours. It's often with many scattered around an immediate area, the networks you mention. We've seen this on TV, neighbours from other...
