Two-lane roads and junctions with left turns - how to stay safe?

In either case your normal left lane position, but not so close to the kerb as to invite someone to squeeze alongside and maybe make that turn. Using the right hand lane where the left lane is ahead as well as left turn will inevitably be misunderstood as obstruction, inviting abuse, and even...

Two-lane roads and junctions with left turns - how to stay safe?

This left turning across the front of bikes is very common, through drivers passing and not accounting for the bike's continuing progress. In the circumstance you decribe, you should be in the left hand lane when going straight on and the rogue left turner is best dealt with by you having an...

Do these derailleur points needs to be lubricated?

I've never found it necessary to lube the top pivot, but the jockey wheel greasing can dry out after getting dirty and washed off repeatedly over time. Then I usually just use a drop of a thick gear oil to relubricate their bearings. .

    Kalkhoff Pro Connect. Impressive range.

I prefer the theory that the Germans bought them because the e-bikes were German. Once Kalkhoff changed the crank unit from the Japanese Panasonic to the German Bosch one, the sales in Germany increased even more. But The Netherlands population with the biggest e-bike sales in Europe stopped...

    Kalkhoff Pro Connect. Impressive range.

It's no more than fashion and other irrelevances, the e-bike market has swung one way and the other several times over the years. In the 1980s the early UK ones were crank drive, which then gave way to hub motors and other drives until 1999 when crank drives again took over the main market for...

    Kalkhoff Pro Connect. Impressive range.

Tillson means the common hub motor hasn't selectable gears, so whether front or rear can't run at optimum efficiency at all road speeds. They are only at maximum efficiency at one road speed, usually about 80% of the maximum assist speed. The rider's gears do not affect that. Having said...

    Chris Evans & Top Gear

For those who wonder why Chris Evans was chosen, the BBC Radio 4 program "The Media Show" included a section in which Chris Evans tells Steve Hewlett about how the deal was done, and how he sees the future of Top Gear, plus the Controller of BBC 2 Kim Shillinglaw on why she thinks Chris is the...

    Chris Evans & Top Gear

Fortunately I don't watch Top Gear and can't stand Chris Evans, so no loss to me. I bear the BBC no ill will so hope the new Top Gear program will be successful for them, but I have my doubts. At least the first episode will have a big audience of the curious and the critical. .

    Military-grade e-bike

Listening to it reveals it's only the aluminium used in the frame claimed to be military grade. Militarily about as useless as the praratrooper bicycle of WW2, no ascertainable records of them ever being of any use in an active situation. .

    Mark forum as read

You surprised me since this is the only way I ever enter the forum, it saves so much time wasting. I wonder how many more aren't aware of this feature? The only disadvantage is that I don't know which forum I'm in without scrolling to the top. .

Small snippet on electric bikes BBC Click 13/06/15

I'm convinced the Mando Footloose IM is illegal anyway, as stated the motor alone drives the rear wheel so it clearly doesn't comply with EU law, which now applies here too. It's not electric assist as the law requires, pedalling only topping up the battery. .

    50 cycles - misleading advertising

C'mon Rob, as adults we all know that honest advertising is virtually an oxymoron. The honesty is always somewhat qualified, truth stretched to it's limits. E-bike range for example? That's why the law recognises that despite all the consumer protection legislation, caveat emptor still...

    50 cycles - misleading advertising

That's right, they were only ever good for 12 mph but climbed ok on moderate hills. I was a bit surprised at Trex finding one not able to manage 5 to 6%, but John Cade knows of a similar experience so maybe some were weaklings. .

Yes, they've changed at least two or three times, including periods with 180 watt ratings and others with 250 watts. Some were fairly capable though always on the slow side. At one time the motorised wheels popped up on ebay from time to time after the bikes had been scrapped, their 22" motor...

    50 cycles - misleading advertising

That K model isn't just "now", they introduced it round about 2007 to try to share the more modern market as well, but have always continued with the Classic style shopper models and have never expanded on the K theme. Of course they don't sell many of them these days, their big years were...

    50 cycles - misleading advertising

Yes, they weren't suitable for steeper hills, up to 8% ok or maybe 10% for lighter riders. It seems from accounts that most bought for fairly gentle needs, shortish trips to local shops etc, so for them they were fine. .

    50 cycles - misleading advertising

Brings to mind Thompson senior a few years ago. In his five stores he very successfully sold shopper style e-bikes from 2002 on. A to B magazine when testing some questioned the very low pedal gearing which only allowed up to about 8 mph pedal assist and the bikes only motoring up to about 12...
