    Regenerative braking

Don't forget that the BMS in a lithium battery cuts off the charge when all the cells are fully charged, so overcharging is impossible. It's then that the braking effort will be dispersed as heat, but at bicycle regeneration levels that would have little chance of melting anything. .

    Type Approval

Trouble is that it all sounds too good to be true Hoppy, I'd never bet against a UK government contriving to put a spoke in the wheel in some way. If they do we'll be back to square one with no-one making these 1000watt bikes. .

    Type Approval

Yes, that seems to be the case if there is no requirement for a number plate space. The only difference from being a bicycle being that requirement for type approval. Although member governments can add further restrictions under some circumstances, such as usage, it's difficult to see how the...

    Regenerative braking

On bicycles the regeneration due to the low weight and speeds is so inefficient that there's virtually no chance of fully recharging a battery. Even if you did, the braking would continue and as you say, the effort then would be lost as heat dissipating out of the hub into the air. Panasonic...

    Advice please

The Kalkhoff can usually be depended on to have the higher quality build that we expect of German made products, and of course it's much more fully equipped. The importers also carry a large range of spares which can be very useful over time but costs them money. Then to those you must add the...

Add suspensions or sell my hybrid/road bike?

The lowest cost upgrade to give suspension would be a pair of Schwalbe Big Apple tyres, sold as "suspension for bikes" and very effective for that purpose. The ones for your bike can be run at as low as 35 lbs pressure and they are remarkably effective in ironing out the bumps. On this link...

    Type Approval

It appears from the EU regulation due for adoption here in January 2016 that registration will not be a requirement. The following copied and pasted from the EU final white paper on type approval requirements for L1e-A and L1e-B: VCR – Annex XIV Registration plate space L1e-A Excluded Only...

    More Battery talk (sorry folks)

Yes, that's it Rob. Long ago Panasonic established this with very long battery lives on their lowish powered crank drives. Even as far back as 2003 when they had one of the first e-bikes ever to use lithium, their little e-folder Will model, the battery in that unstressed system lasted many...

    Split Rim??? Freego Eagle

Weird, I've never seen that kind of split before and I certainly wouldn't use it any more, since the crack would expand further with a tyre under pressure. I'd recommend a rebuild with new rim and spokes. .

New London Ebike hire - Tenders Invited

I can't see anything like 100 miles per day per bike in a London borough. The existing bike hire scheme has most of the bikes used only for the rush hours and the journeys only. Where the existing London scheme came unstuck was on charging, free for the first period of time. People therefore...

New London Ebike hire - Tenders Invited

J C Decaux who run the Paris Velib scheme could be interested since the already operate extensively here in the street advertising field. They had to bully the Paris authorities for extra cash once that bike scheme's huge costs were fully realised, but this looks safer for them and their hire...

    More Battery talk (sorry folks)

Agreed, that's my experience with these eZee batteries. Two and a half years running a powerful motor on occasionally steep hills is a satisfactory life. That battery life is generally only bettered with lower powered systems like some of the crank drives. .

    Woosh Big Bear

Of course we should use what's suitable for each condition and I would hardly use the front brake at all on ice, but the emphasis in this thread is where the best brake should be and why. Both Rob and I were answering on that basis. .
