End of the 25 Kph wall - BionX is re-born

I posted a review of my Villiger BionX a few years ago and have been quite happy with it - except for the annoying 25 Kph wall I hit every day. So I am happy to announce that I have been liberated, thanks to Prochip, who make a simple device called the M-Ped to reset the maximum speed of any...

Styriette 1938 - petrol to electric - retro is IN

The BionX rear carrier battery system seems to have inspired a new look at an old bike. Styriette 1938/2009 - Eine revolutionäre Idee aus den 1930er Jahren erlebt ihr Comeback.

    New BionX motor+hub gear

I actually think this is a very smart move. I have the Villiger BionX with an 8 speed freewheel (single front crankset) and find I never use more than 4 of the rear gears. This would correspond fairly closely to range of the 3-speed hub. The ability to adjust the power settings on the BionX...

    E-bike expansion in Europe

Ebikes in France - and Switzerland I actually live very close to the Swiss border near Geneva, so I cross over to the Geneva area on my commute every day. So perhaps I should correct my statement and say that I see Ebikes in the 'Geneva area' every day... By the way, if anyone is in the...

    E-bike expansion in Europe

They are everywhere When I got my first ebike in 2001, I would perhaps see one per month on the street. Now I see them every day...

    Tandems.

Folding tandems Bike Friday makes the best folding tandem. For the record, in normal use, they are not really more efficient than separate bikes, as it is quite difficult to use anything but straight leg power. Standing up on hills requires and experienced, confident and very coordinated...

The best pedelec (for me anyway)

Last Saturday the research and testing finally ended, and the payments began... I am the proud owner of a Villiger Levantina E (one of the first I think) This bike is certainly not for everybody, but I think it is the best available for my needs and riding style. Tech: Bionx 250W...

    What happens at 25 km/hr?

Unable to unlock the Villiger - yet Thanks for all the replies. Basically, I don't really want to go faster than 15 mph, but the problem is that on this bike if you inadvertently get to 16, it feels like the brakes are automatically put on. Some have described it as hitting a wall. If it were...

Disabling the Bionx Max speed... Found a thread on disabling the Bionx max speed. I will give it a try and report back.

    What happens at 25 km/hr?

Now that the weather is nice, I am starting to test ride e-bikes with the intention of purchasing soon. Today I test rode the new Villiger Leventina, which is the same bike as the Trek T500E. Villiger: LEVENTINA TOUR E I was very impressed with the build quality of the bike, and the BionX...

    My Torq has died

Wow, I'm glad this was not a "Technical" discussion... I look forward to the day when this type of discussion is either unnecessary, or restricted to professional e-bike technicians, rather than consumers.

Will all e-bikes be front hub motor in future?

Opinion: I think this is a very interesting question. As e-bikes evolve, there seems to be two branches of design which I think are based on different historical paradigms. Motorcycle paradigm: Motorbikes have been around for some time now, and have a fairly predictable form-factor, one...

Thoughts on selecting a new e-bike

Thanks, I will certainly try some of the Panasonic models. Question about the Bionx - do 40.7 volts make the 250 watt motor more powerful? A Swiss review suggests that this new bike has an assist that is somewhere between the Bionx PL250 and PL250HT, but I am not really sure what that means.

Thoughts on selecting a new e-bike

Warning - long post Thoughts on selecting a new e-bike I have been interested in e-bikes since I saw my first one. I was in Berlin in Sept 1998, and in the main Mercedes-Benz showroom on the Ku'damm, they had a "Hybrid Bike" Mercedes-Benz Hybrid Bike I was fascinated, and started...

    Trek T500 E info?

Does anyone have any insight into Trek's plans for Ebikes in 2009? The only references I can see to the Trek T500 E Bionx models are from Dutch sites, with no results on the American or UK Trek sites. Would be nice to see them roll out the models in other countries, as they look pretty...

Any experience with Gazelle Orange Innergy, Villager E-Ride or Trek E500?

Thanks, I have a reasonable commute of about 6 miles each way over rolling terrain with no really steep hills. I had a Yamaha Easy Super for 7 years, so am pretty familiar what to expect with a crank motor. I may even go back to one after testing the others. I am actually looking for a sit up...

Any experience with Gazelle Orange Innergy, Villager E-Ride or Trek E500?

These three bikes are on my short list, but I have had a hard time finding any real reviews. The Villager and Trek are identical bikes, with BionX and a battery on the rear carrier. The Gazelle is a front hub model. About the only Gazelle reviews I have found have been mostly negative...
