I'm just very familiar with the routes and know where the sand collects; doesn't take much to send the bike flying! My main problem with sand is that when the surface is wet the resulting spray contains grains that get everywhere; it doesn't need much for that to happen.

Thanks Steve - sounds good. I ride the Giant in max power all the time, not because I need to but adding extra input through the pedals is just unpleasant! There's still plenty of range for my needs but it would be great to have more in reserve.
