Today whilst out on my Agattu i lost all my gears, the pedals turn and the gears just slip...all of them. Is it an easy problem to fix ? I have only done about 170 miles since new. I remember seeing a thread about lining up the yellow/red marks but can't find it. Can anybody help ?
Thanls in advance.

With nexus hubs they are setup in 4th gear. In 4th the two yellow lines in the rear hub window will line up. If it doesn't line up the adjuster barrel on the gear lever will allow for some adjustment, just turn it by hand. Clockwise to loosen the cable and anti-clockwise to tighten.

The other thing to watch out for is cable snag. Check where the cable goes into the rear hub and the gear shifter to make sure it is seated correctly. Most sudden gear problems are due to the bars being spun/accident/bike knocked over and the cable becoming snagged. If it is simply push it back in. Also if it has been snagged and pulled too tight, it would display the same symptoms as you describe, total loss of drive.

There's nothing to add to what Lloyd says except to observe that this happens to me if I leave my downward gear change late on a steep hill and snatch down from 6th to 2nd, say, sometimes without easing off the pedal pressure enough.

In that case, the cable slackens suddenly and slips out at the twist grip end as Lloyd describes. With experience, I now leave myself time to change down properly but I do find with the Panasonic system that it takes time to tune in to the system's modus operandi.

When you do, it's enormously rewarding to use the power characteristics to their best advantage and the bike starts to feel highly intuitive and controllable rather than counter-intuitive as it can at first.

Flecc describes this rather well in his trials of the Kalkhoffs.

Managed to get Tim on line late last night who referred me to the manual. Can't seem to get the yellows in line despite adjustment at shift grip. When i do adjust it won't turn higher then 4......anyone got a photo of how cable should sit as the manual isn't that clear.

are you definately setting the lines whilst the shifter is in 4th? If so there must be something else snagging or obstructing the cables route. Check the outer cable end at the wheel end, you will see a black arm sticking out of the bottom of the hub which holds the outer cable end (ferrule). If the cable has been pulled tight this could have popped out. If you try to reset the lines with the cable incorrectly seated it will be near impossible to adjust. This is what I would check first.

Next move down to the very end of the cable, you will see a 9mm pinch bolt. Follow the cabel out of the pinch bolt, all the way back to the outer cable end. It should run in a pre-cut groove in the plastic gear selector on the hub. Again if it has become snagged it could have popped out of this groove, casuing abnormal adjustments.

Thirdly check the enitire cable outer to see if there are any kinks or breaks in the cable. Sometimes the outer itself can push through the cap on the end (ferrule) and the insides become the outsides  . Again this results in abnormal adjustments.

I would put money on it being a cable routing problem somewhere as the shifters and hubs are pre-adjusted and can't really be messed around with. The cable is the only variable.

Has anything happened prior to this? Has the bike been loaded in a car or had the wheel off? Has it been crashed or dropped? Bars loosened or turned? Any info would help me pinpoint the area where the problem lies.

just spoke to jim at 50c, i have now removed wheel, gear cable was loose, the plastic locking thing won't move any way and part of it is broken and the gear cog moves back and forward and is very loose..he advised me to take to shimano service centre. Bike hasn't been dropped or carried in car...only goes out on leisure rides when the sun comes out !..it happened whislt going uphill with no gear changes...i so the hill coming and dropped a couple of gears...stopped pedaling for a few secs as advised.

Sounds like the gear assembly has shifted and wedged against the locking ring. you need to remove the old assembly to see which bits may be damaged and replace (you may have to break the locking ring to remove, it is only plastic). A shimano service centre will not be likely to have the parts on the shelf, unless you find one that works with nexus parts. You could try asking 50c if they have a spare gear assembly on the shelf they could send out? It is quite simple to fit once you have removed the offending one!
