I changed the standard 22 for a 19 sprocket which had the effect of taking out the bottom gear and adding a higher top gear. This was great for commute, but I missed the original lower bottom gear on some leisure rides with steeper hills.

Now fitted an Alfine 8 speed (same ratios as Nexus), which with the 19t gives a slightly higher top, but more importantly is like adding back the original 22t bottom gear as well.

I'm trying the trigger shifter which means it's slightly slower to change many gears at once, but does give more room on handlebar grip and avoids accidental shifts. The Alfine feels happy to change under a moderate load whereas the 7 speed required backing off pedal pressure.

All in all a positive change.

Next on the list is Marathon Winter studded tyres. I'm very tempted to get a dynamo hub wheel that can take a disc brake which would be great up front. But I think I'll probably go for an additional battery to extend range first.
