Hi,

I don't have an ebike yet. I've heard that not all packs have built-in balancers, and that properly balancing a battery pack can take all night. True?

Thx

It would be better to tell us what you want your ebike for, then we can advise you. Nobody that I know worries about balancing.

Any decent battery will have built in balancing circuitry. It comes into operation as the cells in the battery reach the top of their charging curve.
However, any battery that is used and charged regularly will stay in balance so long as all the cells are healthy. Leaving a battery on charge overnight and unattended seems to be the cause of the majority of fires that are reported. Don't do it ! It's uneccesary and dangerous.
A quality battery and charger bought together from a reputable supplier should give trouble free service for years.
Do not skimp on the cost of the battery (the most expensive part of any bike) it's false economy.

Lion batteries top balance usually the last 5% of the charge.
Balance only becomes an issue when batteries aren't used for along time or maybe if one doesn't carry out a full charge regime.

Not a common problem. and when encountered is usually due to a long period of no use (years), and/or probably indicative of deeper issues. Rectifying by charging overnight is partially due to the lower current handling capacity of the balancing circuits which are ample for normal use rectifying a sub decimal imbalance. - and frequently such a pack will require opening and direct cell measurement/validating/charging, an overnight charge is a 'hail mary' fix..

Used 'normally' or regularly battery cells are charged and drained at the same rate so any imbalances are nominal and managed as part of the usual charging procedure.

battery packs without a bms are rare, and are generally either very old, diy builds, or scam budget deals. options best avoided in all situations.

Yose-power have a good rep for batteries as well as selling some of the lowest price conversion kits ( happy with my 2yr old kit still) Woosh sell mid drive kits and complete bikes as do wisper, which should cover a good range of options for every budget with 'good' battery options ;)

Never charge overnight , unless one is willing to stay awake to monitor .
