Finding my (electric) wheels

Hi everyone,

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Generally, with a problem, someone out there has already found the answer!

I need to source a new controller for a Bearprint folding bike. We have 2 of these bikes, and I have swapped controllers, so I know that is where the problem lies. I have been working with my local elec bike dealer to fix the problem, but we are both stuck at the moment looking for a suitable replacement controller.

I have been told that the Freego part will do, but we have checked and the wires are different. We have also looked at controllers for other makes. We don't want to try to adapt something not quite right in case we blow it up!

I see from past posts that others have had problems with Bearprint controllers. Now that Bearprint has disappeared, can anyone advise who to talk to please?

We are on the south coast between Portsmouth and Chichester.

Brushless controllers are generic. Some have different features, but in most cases they can be swapped from bike to bike without problems, but you often have to change connectors. the only way that I know to blow up a controller, assuming that you get one of the same voltage(36v) and not too powerful for your motor (anything up to 20amps max) is to connect the battery the wrong way round.

If you could post a picture of your controller showing the wires spread out so that we can see what you've got, it will be much easier to advise.

The KU63 controller from BMSBattery or the CON61 from Greenbikekit will work for nearly all 36v hub-motored bikes, orthe KU62 if you have that kidney-shaped control panel, which is an option with the CON61. They cost about £30 for two including shipping. Unfortunately it's not a lot cheaper for one.

One problem that you might get is the size if you've got a small compartment for it. The Cyclamatic controller is very small and is already a tight squeeze in its compartment, so it's tricky to get the above-mentioned ones in without changing connectors to smaller ones, so you should also give us the size of your present one.

What's wrong with your present controller? They're normally pretty reliable unless you short something out. Maybe it's fixable.

Hello Alan1954,

It is probably my Bearprint posts you have seen before!:)
I can tell you that since Bearprint went under my local Freego dealer has been sorting out all my technical issues with my Bearprint non folding Ebike.
Just a few weeks ago they fitted a new Controller on my Bearprint together with a new throttle.
Even the 2 replacement controllers I received from Bearprint themselves last year had different colour wiring but they all do the same job.
My guess is the Freego would be a drop in replacement.

Good luck,
Barry.
