Following excellent advice on this site I have managed to strip and clean the sticky freewheel on my wife Freego ebike.
Could anyone advise me as to the best oil or grease to lubricate it with before I put it back together?
many thanks

I have used Shimano freewheel grease before, the ones are also generally recommended.

  • Shimano Workshop Special Grease for Pawl-Type Freehub Bodies: Specifically formulated for Shimano freewheels.

  • R.S.P. Go Flow: A semi-fluid grease designed for pawls, providing good penetration and corrosion protection.

  • Dumonde Tech Freehub Grease: Known for its performance across a wide temperature range, including low temperatures.

  • Finish Line Premium Ceramic Tech Grease: A popular choice for various bike parts, including freewheels.

  • Park Tool PPL-2 Polylube 1000 Grease: A general-purpose grease that can be used on freewheels.

Are the ball bearings loose or caged? If they are loose, you need grease to hold them into place but I have often used Vaseline for this purpose. Kinder on the hands if you have to adjust/shim the bearings. Other than that, I just give an extra few drops of motor oil after the freewheel is adjusted and assembled.
One thing you may notice on many freewheels is that there are thin washers under the covers. These washers are shims and are used to adjust the bearings. If the freewheel is loose/sloppy after assembly and you want the freewheel to run well, you need to adjust the bearing by taking out one of the thinner washers or possibly replacing a thicker washer with a thinner washer (from another old freewheel). This can be tedious and but I have done it.

Marine grease is about the best for bearings. As to the pawls inside the freewheel just a light coating of general purpose grease will be fine. Mind you dont heavily grease pawl as they can stick back and not engage the ratchet ring. Its just really a light wipe to keep corrosion at bay.

Original 3-in-one. Nothing else. It must be the one that says, "Cleans, Lubricates and Prevents rust.

its a bike, any lubricating grease you have access to is good enough. a squirt or 3 from anyone's grease gun into the corner of a ziplock bag is all you need.

and avoid pressure washers and restricted flow hose pipes when washing the bike in future..
