Hi,

Have any of you heard of a 'data tag' system which is a way of marking your bike in such a way that the police can identify your bike and it is far more difficult for professional bike thieves to make your bike 'clean'? As most cycle thefts are opportunist, I'm not sure whether this is any more effective than just marking your bike with a security pen with your postcode and house number.

Yes, i had this fitted to my Marin MTB when i purchased it, it is a small magentic identifier fitted inside the downtube by the retailer and registered with a central database in the states, you get little non-removeable frame stickers to attach to warn off would-be perps.... but you're right that it is obviously better to secure the bike properly, and with the appropriate lamp it is easy to find & remove security pen markings.
