Hi, I don't have a casco myself but I've just recently had a look at helmet safety standards, and I believe the toughest standard to pass is that of the Snell Memorial Foundation.

website here

The only helmets sold in the uk which pass this are made by Specialized, in fact I think all Specialized helmets have a Snell certificate which includes some of the more reasonably-priced ones. There's a list of certificated helmets on the website.

Obviously I don't know what floats your boat, helmet-wise, but if you're interested in the best protection these might be worth a look.

hi thanks for that info it makes interesting reading being until recently a motor biker in which of course the wearing was compulsary it now seems to feel strange to be without one on the road so i will be choosing one but which ? it seems like a little more research is called for

i like the "tony hawk" style helmets. they cover a lot of your head and they have fewer of those silly vent holes that introduce week spots into the helmet. they have a hard plastic outer skin which probably distributes forces a bit better. you get more attention from the kids because they can't understand why an "old" person (above 17) is wearing one and not using a skateboard. i filled out the vent holes with extra bits of polystyrene wrapped in duct tape for added protection and to keep the rain off.

i would were a full face helmet but its unheard of and i worry that i would get pulled over by police
