I had an issue with the chain coming off and jumping when changing gears on my 6 speed ebike. I took it to a shop and they stopped the chain jumping and now it's a smooth transition, but when I push the bike it now makes a loud ticking sound, which I'm sure wasn't there before.

Is it normal for bike to make a ticking sound when you push it?

It depends what they did to fix it. If they put a new freewheel on, then yes.

Hi Saneagle,

He didn't remove the wheel so don't think a new freewheel is on there...he was messing with the chain and derailleur...said he only tweaked it as it was only slightly out, but I heard him using spray and clanking about. He said bottom bracket is loose

Work out where the noise is coming from by spinning the wheel whilst off the ground. Not many sources. Freewheel / cassette? Brake? Something rubbing?

Maybe the freewheel was jammed by dirt so it didn't freewheel when you pushed the bike and the pedals and chain rotated. Now the pedals stay still and the freewheel is working properly.

It's impossible to say without knowing what the noise is.

Stiff link ?.
Go around the entire chain and make sure all pivot as they should

Chain pivots as it should, AndyBike.

Ok, so when I spin the wheel and it begins to slow down when pushing the bike it makes the same sound. Does this mean it's the freewheel that is now clear and normal?

I tried to upload a clip but don't know why it won't work on this site.

Some freewheels are very loud. Others are quiet. If loud ones go quieter, it's because they need attention, like lubrication.

If you don't clean and lubricate a freewheel, dirt acuumulates between the motor and the gears, which causes drag on it. That makes the gears turn, which turns the chain and pedals when you push the bike, so no noise at all from the freewheel because it's not freewheeling. I'm guessing that the shop pulled out all the crud and put some oil into the freewheel. Now it's working properly.

Ok, understood. Thanks Saneagle

Clicks on bikes are so damned annoying, because for the most part they're coming from a completely different part than you think.

Knees in my case
Reminds me of when I had pneumonia. Twice, I went all round the bedroom looking for the loose plug that was making that electrical crackling sound, then, back in bed for the third time, I realised that it was coming from me, so had to get dressed at 01:00 am and a taxi to the hospital. I didn't realise how bad it was until I tried to tell the taxi driver where I needed to go. The poor guy was worried that I was going to die in his taxi, and he kept looking in his mirror at me all the way there, and I could see his relief when we arrived at the hospital still alive. I like to think that he was worried for me, but it was probably the thought of losing the rest of his shift while the police and other people sorted out the dead body in the back of his taxi.

Having a stiff in the back of his car would have lost him at least an entire shift while scenes of crime crawled all over it looking for evidence. No wonder the poor fellow was concerned.
