Presumably, a chain guard would rob this bicycle of its limited power so that's why it's been omitted. It's therefore essential that bicycle clips are worn before setting off lest one's trouser leg becomes caught up between the chain and chainwheel. It is so easy to ruin a perfectly good pair of flannels on these contraptions if one is not mindful of such dangers. The alternative, of course, is to wear tailored shorts when bicycling.
