Hi guys & girls,
I'm Jay, 35 years old and live in Papworth Everard which is just west of Cambridge.
I'm very new to electric bikes, I've started to research it in the hope that I can cycle my 45 mile round trip commute a couple of times a week when the weather is half decent.
Originally I was thinking of converting my Trek FX7.5 to electric using one of the conversions that are available. I did a little research into that and was then a little more uncertain of what I want than when I started!
So today I popped into The Electric Cycle shop in Cambridge to have a go on a couple of their bikes, and chat about the various options for a conversion to my bike. I had a go on the Wisper and the Ultra Motor A2B. I instantly fell for the Ultra Motor and took them up on their offer of hiring the bike to me until Tuesday. I love it, but when the battery goes it really is a bit too much to peddle unassisted for too long! It's fairly heavy at 37kg and awkward to get it in and out of the car & house etc. I think I've decided against this bike now because of these things. It really is a lot of fun to ride though!
Great service from the guys at The Electric Bike shop though, they spent a lot of time with me today, even though I told them right at the start that I wouldn't be buying right away and maybe not for a few months.
So right now I'm back to the idea of converting my bike or maybe getting a decent mountain bike and converting that. I'd like something that's good for the commute and would also be happy going off-road too, I'm not talking any extreme downhill stuff but something a bit more capable off-road than my FX7.5.
What are peoples experiences with converting their own bikes? What conversions are best? From what I've read the Bionx seems good as does the Heinzmann, expensive though!
I've also seen this from The Electric Wheel Company:
Nano electric conversion - Conversion kits - Products
A lot cheaper than the other kits I've read about, anyone tried one?
Sorry for the long post, if this is better posted elsewhere just let me know.
Cheers,
Jay
