Cyclamatic Power Plus - Freewheel replacement and upgrade

Yo,

I have a Cyclamatic Power Plus "Mountain Bike". Living in Cumbria, I find that I could do with a lower gear for our hills and also, as many riders find, a higher one for the flat.

Has anyone had experience of changing the rear "freewheel" cluster of sprockets? Mine is fitted with a 7-speed set-up with a range of sprockets from 14 teeth to 28 teeth?

The DNP Freewheel 7 speed 11/32t supplied by Cyclezee looks to be a tempting option but my question is - will it fit?

I have a Cyclamatic folder as well which is fine. On that, the 6-speed 14-28t freewheel came off with chain whip tools leaving a component which contained the freewheel on the axle and there was a collection of individual sprockets separated by nylon spacers and some clusters riveted together. Perhaps I dismantled it in a way which was not intended as I did not have the Shimano tool and only partially dismantled it, rather than removing the unit, but it looked to be far from standard. The 7-speed unit that I want to replace on the MTB may be different.

I would welcome advice from anyone who has upgraded or even replaced the freewheel.

Many thanks.

It souns like you dismantled that one rather than removed it. You have to use a proper free-wheel removal tool, and it has to be one with a hole at least 12.5mm so that it goes over the axle. You'll need the tool to replace your next one. The DNP free-wheel from Cyclezee should be a straight swap.

Thank you for your encouraging reply. I should be able to get hold of the freewheel tool over the weekend and will try to take off the whole component and assess it then. The unit fitted at the moment is Shimano, so hopefully will not be so exotic and will allow for a straight swap.
