E-Bikes Continue their Rise on Dutch Market
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands - Bike sales dropped with double digit numbers in 2012, but e-bikes did OK as its share on the Dutch market continued to rise. Electric bikes are now the most important segment.
E-bike accounted for 42% of the revenues made with all bike sales in 2012.
In 2012, 171,000 electric pedal assisted bicycles were sold in Holland, taking up 16% of all of the 1,039,000 new bikes that were bought. Market share wise e-bikes grew by 1.3%, but volume wise a slight drop was recorded as 2011 sales stood at 178,000.
Turnover bigger than city bikes
In terms of sales turnover e-bikes are now bigger compared to city bike sales which for decades was the most important segment of the Dutch market.
Electric bicycles accounted for 42% of the revenues made with all bike sales in 2012; at dealers its turnover shares stood with 43% a bit higher. The average price consumers paid for an e-bike was 1,821 euro. (about £1,600)
