Yes, sounds like when you pedal it tries to engage the motor, which of course loads the battery, hence the lights go out.
This maybe because the lights are faulty (i.e. showing the battery lower than it is) or more likely the battery is dead, or the connections between battery and controller are not very good. Does the motor work?

As far as kits, the Bionx is expensive but has a good reputation, the Heinzmann is "vintage" but rock solid reliable, eZee's kit is supposed to be quite good and Alien's kit is based on reasonable technology (Suzhou Bafang as used in some eZee bikes and Wisper bikes) and has been used by a few people on this forum. A lot depends on how well you install it though...
(For example the Cyclone kit reportedly has a bad reputation for water proofing, but some users have gone to town with the sealant and produced a good result)
As ever do some searching on the forum, and other forums such as Endless Sphere to get more info.

Thanks Torrent99 for your reply
Regarding the folding e-bike the motor seems to work fine i dont think the bike would get me up a hill without hard peddaling it is a 36v so i would of thought it would but it just seems a bit under powered. As for the kits i will look at the sites that you said i have never heard of Endless Sphere where will i find that?
Regards Sammy
P.S Have you or anyone had any experience with the 48v kits
