Electrifying a recumbent

Anyone know of a good hub motor for a 26" wheel 135mm OLN that will accept a Shimano style 9 speed cassette? Going to go on a ICE recumbent trike so not too worried about the 250w legality thing 'cos it's only going to be used "off road" but never the less range IS important !!

Does your Xipi motor take a 9 speed cassette, Frank?
If not, the only hub motor that I know of that does is the new Bafang CST, although I've never seen anyone selling it yet.

Hi Steve, I have had two trikes electrified, and both were with Heinzmann steel geared motors. The first used an electrified mtb wheel, 7spd freewheel, the second, an ICE flat folding trike, had the motor fitted in the 20" wheel, with 9spd freewheel. Both conversions were carried out by myself with the wheels supplied by Steve Punchard of http://www.electricmountainbikes.com/. He also gave help and supplies throughout. Steve also has info re which current hubs will take cassette/freewheel, disc compatibility etc.

I can give you quite a bit of info re performance, fitting and suitability of the different motors etc as well as pics of the trikes. Also thoughts on dishing/strength reliability re trikes, and just remembered STABILITY!
Kind regards
Nigel

Hi stevew

Yes we keep 9 speed cogs It fits in OK but need to stretch to 140 mm

For long range we fit a 10ah or 15 ah 48 volt battery ether side off the rack

10 AH battery 4.5 kilos 15 ah battery 6 .5 kilos

when one runs out swap over the battery's also a good balance

Our kits are NOT cheap

they are direct drive 1,500 watts Motors wheel and motor 8 kilos

I fitted an ezee kit to my Scorpion fs and use it every day. It was a 300rpm 20" wheel good for 22mph at 48v. I use an 8 speed freewheel but I believe that the 8 and 9 speeds are the same width so would also be OK. Extra weight is about 3.5kg for motor and 4kg for battery. It is so much fun.
