I bought an Endura Gridlock jacket for my daily commute. Impressed with the quality and bright luminous yellow colour. I have now tested in very heavy rain and I can confirm that it is 100% waterproof. However, claims that it reduces sweat are greatly exaggerated.. I find that it is best to wear only a t shirt underneath and change when I get to work. I made the mistake of cycling to work in a shirt and tie..one morning.. then straight into a meeting.. not a pleasant sight:eek: or smell:eek:  I suggest saving yourself £40 and stick to a £1.99 builders waistcoat over a 'normal' coloured waterproof.

score 7 out of 10.

Hi Musicbooks,

I'm having the same issues at the moment, having just started commuting to work on my new bike.

Last week I arrived at work dripping - wearing a cotton polo shirt under a "breathable" cycling jacket that the bike shop sold me with my bke.

However i went for a ten mile ride yesterday wearing a polyester polo shirt with much better results!

I'll be sticking to polyester from now on.

Steve.

...a cotton polo shirt under a "breathable" cycling jacket ...
A breathable shell can never work miracles! The base layers also need to be breathable, wicking moisture away from your skin to the outside surface from where it can evaporate. Cotton acts like a reservoir instead - it is no coincidence that most towels are made of cotton!

The main problem with using a normal waterproof jacket in my experience is the inevitable hood - flapping about, collecting rain... If you have a jacket with a hood that folds into the collar then that should be okay though.

I fully agree that an Agattu is not the way to avoid arriving sweaty.

The way the motor urges you to go faster, I find myself working quite hard.

Re-gearing to an 18T have further amplified this.
