That is not the full story, Airbus had Siemens force another company to cancel their flight planned for the 7th of July. I think that is why the Cricri flight was done as a protest against the very unsportsmanlike attitude of Airbus. The other plane was also capable of flying to Dover and back...
There's nothing sportsmanlike about big business. Airbus have long been the victim of underhand dirty tricks by the US Aircraft industry and Federal authorities, so it's not surprising if some of that has rubbed off,
Airbus has a lot at stake, since theirs is a serious two seater intended to have a commercial future.

They've got two real commercial objectives and being first would have had long term publicity value. Airbus will succeed in this field and as they do over time, will absorb the European competition in the process.
It's no different in the USA of course, where Boeing are the dominant force in many areas of their commercial plane industry, partly by taking over anything that shows promise.
