Formentera - eBike heaven

Thought I'd share this as it's one of my favourite places to go when the weather's good. The island is best before August when the island gets inundated with Italians on holiday zooming around revving their scooters, but from about now right through into July it's a fantastic break.

The island reputedly has the highest concentration of battery charging points in the world (it's pretty small) and this is the main company renting out bikes there : Elektracar.com - Eco-rent and sale of electric vehicles on the island of Formentera.Cars and Bikes rent and eco-excurions.

It's a flight to Ibiza airport, transfer to ferry port and then a short ferry over to Formentera (20 minutes - 50 minutes depending on how much you pay and whether you go from Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa).

It's a very relaxed place out of August peak with lots of lovely coastal routes and very manageable (pretty flat). Crystal clear water, beautiful beaches and for those so inclined no rules about what to wear (or what not wear !) at the sea side.

Party Season doesn't start in Ibiza either until the end of May and so there's still time to stop over there and take in the beautiful cherry blossom valleys if you fancy it before the prices start rocketing and the beats start pounding. There are few places in the Med more beautiful in the Spring and it has some of the best weather of the Balearics.

Hi Alex,

You've definitely got me in a gear now,so tell me what do i do now?

Mountainsport.
Check out cheap flights to Ibiza - been some flights recently from about £50 return. The slow ferry's about 20 Euros return - fast one from Ibiza Town more like 45-50. Taxi to ferry port from the airport about 20-25Euros each way.

There's a bus from the ferry terminal to get you close to most hotels / guest houses in Formentera else it's another taxi if you don't hire a car. Of course if you just travel with a rucksack you can probably do it on a bike or scooter. Daytime peak temperatures usually nudge into the 20s by May but the evenings are Spring-like (12-15 degrees). If you get a sheltered spot on the beach and the wind is down it's plenty warm enough for a bit of sun but it's not uncomfortably hot for cycling this early in the year.

BBC Weather : Eivissa

I think they start renting eBikes out from 1st May but easy enough to send an e-mail to check. Hotels are not as cheap as you can find on Ibiza - the place is wall-to-wall yachts come July - but some are not excessive out of Season.

So much cold weather this year - it does tend to turn thoughts to sunnier climes !

A few pics probably give more of an idea :

Ibiza Town port where the fast ferries go from :

Nice view of the old town from the ferry last Summer - I went to a Jazz festival up in the ramparts which was brilliant :

Ferry port in Formentera - the place you rent bikes from is just round the corner along with a whole host of scooter and boat rental companies - it's so manageable and free of stress once you arrive there !

Lol. I thought you wanted further persuading ! Let's hope for some nice hot sunny weather in UK this year. It would certainly make a nice change - and as a bonus you can use your own eBike with no planes required.
