"The initiative had 360 ebikes, with 200 of them in operation at 66 GPS-ringfenced parking spots around Aberdeen. Despite this, the operator Big Issue Sharebike has confirmed it wants out of the scheme."

Hmm...I'll tell you what the real big issue is...
up to a maximum of £12 for the day

What does that even mean? Do they magically charge themselves up over the air?

When it dies after an hr can you go swap it for another? What if the base station is 3m away?

And jam on the handlebars (at least I hope it was jam....), who cleans them...?

fukc off....

I wonder what is the cost of such initiative per person who is using those bikes. It might be cheaper to buy e-bikes for all who are interested.

Ebike rental docking stations aren't near my home. For short journeys they're priced a bit lower than taxis, and substantially higher than buses over the same distance. Bus tickets to travel all day cost less than half of £12. To be very commonly used, cities would have to be saturated with rental ebike docking stations.

It's all bulls1t, not a model at all.

Batteries, battery stations, where you can stop and swap, that's the future

I watch on YT the other day a hydrogen powered e-bike. The hydrogen is stored in a solid medium, the rider unwrapped the new hydrogen battery and slotted it in the battery compartment. The recharge at the hydrogen fuel station takes only a few seconds. To prove that the battery is safe, the demonstrator tossed a battery directly into his well lit wood burning cradle. It's not cheap though.
In a few years, we should see safe all solid state Li-ion batteries.

I have a bottle of butane that is used for refilling my portable soldering iron/hot gun, I just turn bottle upside down, push in the nozzle and boom, fully fuelled up in cpl secs.

Hydrogen has to be the future?
