Help with old EZip Bike

I was given an Izip bike about 6 years ago but, sadly, rarely used it (we lived on a boat at the time and were not able to charge it easily). The battery stopped working about 6 months after we got it and it has been sitting in a dry garage ever since.

We have finally moved in to a house and I took the bike out of storage a few months ago. It looks in pretty good nick but the battery doesn't work. I had it checked over a couple of weeks ago in an electric bike shop and they said the battery is kaput and not easily replaced so they recommended just taking the bike to the tip :(

I am really not happy about dumping an old, but potentially useful bike in mint condition so thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any ideas. Does anyone know of anywhere/anyone who refurbishes old bikes or may have a suitable battery available? I am in the South West but could courier it to a repair place if needed. Happy to pay a decent price to get it on the road again if possible.

I don't have the exact model to hand but can check tomorrow. Any ideas/advice will be gratefully received!

You need to give us a bit more so that we can identify which one it is. A photo or link would help.

Don't take any notice of that video. All the parts are readily and cheaply available without involving Izip. His main complaint is about punctures, which has very little to do with the bike.

Thanks for this - will take a photo tomorrow and post here.

You need a 24volt battery. Lipo.is the best performing option. And available from eBay,Amazon or insat. With charger. Insat cost but you should get a complete working setup.

Ps how long has Guilford been in Cornwall? Your in the SW!

The battery case has a few screws holding the two halves together and a couple hold the handle on. Remove them all to open up the case. There, you'll see two SLA batteries. You can get replacements in the UK for about £70. Alternatively, you can buy a 34v lithium battery and charger that'll fit in the case for about £150, which will give you double the range and will last a lot longer than SLAs.

Before buying SLAs, let us know which ones you've chosen because they have to be the right type, not just the right size.

Here's a guy that converted his bike from SLAs to Lithium recently. He's very happy with the results. Since the conversion, he's added a wattmeter and switch:

Thanks for the info D8ve!
Ha ha, you noticed the Guildford thing! I didn't know the details were viewable to others :)
I am actually in the SW, not Guildford, I just put in any old town on the sign up form. I just have a thing about giving unnecessary details sometimes :)

Thanks loads, this sounds very interesting and do-able. Great info! I am unfortunately about to go away for 2 weeks but will revisit this when I'm home again and will post again when I've had a chance to look into this properly
