How Would You Promote Electric Bikes?

It strikes me that the electric bike industry suffers two major hurdles to becoming big here in the UK - marketing and distribution.

Distribution is slowly being solved. Small numbers of electric bike shops are popping up all over the UK, major national retailers like Evans Cycles and Halfords are also experimenting with electric bikes. The big win though would come from winning over the independent bike shops, but I think this is dependent on the first factor gaining traction.

Marketing. It’s a really abstract idea, but think of marketing as anything that gets prospective customers walking into an electric bike shop as marketing. You can roughly break these down into four separate stages (This is called the AIDA principle):
  • Attention
  • Interest
  • Desire
  • Action.
My thinking is we’re all intelligent people on here; the perfect foundation for generating ideas and making them happen. It’s safe to assume that everyone on here would love for electric bikes to grow and prosper, especially in the UK. So how would you, not necessarily on the biggest budget, go about promoting electric bikes?

It’ll be interesting to see if your ideas chimes with an idea I have for a small project which I’ll share with you all here tomorrow. I think it’s a good thing to share ideas, as well as any inspiration or other news, videos, articles and stuff which has help raise awareness and interest in electric bikes like this YikeBike Advert on YouTube with over 750,000 views, or the Gadget Show’s Urban Bike Courier challenge.

There’s that old saying, if you can’t make your ideas happen, you’re doing them an injustice. Well, sometimes it’s impractical for a one-man band to change the world. That’s why sharing and colloborating is awesome. :)

Imagine watching your idea for an F1 car vs. electric bike race across London on YouTube, or something else like attaching an electric bike motor with pedals to a microlight and flying it across London at rush hour :D ... although I did the maths and realized the power-to-weight ratios wouldn’t work... but still?!

Ideas for marketing on the internet...
Maybe something that could involve BEBA...
Or the Electric Bike Magazine or A to B Magazine...
Or even the Pedelecs Forum!

What do you think?
