Specialized Enduro Expert SL (2008 model) full suspension bike....
Screen shot 2011-06-28 at 23.07.42.jpg
very high spec all terrain bike ...weighs about 12kg........

thinking of putting a motor onto this bike, mainly off road but still needs to be legal for short stretches on road etc.
forks and front wheel and disc are probably not suitable for front wheel conversion, so thinking it will be rear wheel. also thinking back pack for battery.........

all this is leading me in the direction of 'electricmountainbikes.com' with their HEINZMANN CONVERSION (retro fit kit).

anybody had any dealings with this company and their kits ???
any other suggestions for converting this bike ?

the company 'kinetics' also have the kit , but the guy has been unable to supply me with a bike mirror for 6 months !!!.....so a bit reluctant to go there ........

Excellent choice. Heinzmann are the most powerful legal motors.

Well worth talking to Steve Punchard who owns electricmountainbikes.com.

The higher torque steel geared versions are particularly good on the steepest slopes, but are noisy. The 41nm nylon geared version is quieter and still very powerful.

frank can you link me to a full product detail of what you are offering....
motor needs to be high torque for uphill (please advise this rating) , rear wheel, disc brake, preferably rucksack battery and quick release attachment. also throttle....

Andy, spoke to steve, couple of problems......
heinzmann rear wheel fitting could be unsuitable for disc brake...this bike does not have v brake fitting...he is going to look into that...
he has bionx system...not as powerful torque and battery may not fit in the frame....sending me a template to try....battery replacement cost also very high....
a new kit from uk manufacturer almost ready to launch...he is checking on when this is available......not sure if i would want a version 1 of something new.......

maybe not going to be just so easy to get a kit for this bike (as i expected !!!!!).

frank, could you give more detail.....controller dimensions and how does it fit to frame ? i have no space on the downframe as in your pics because there is a suspension unit there on my bike.....
does rear wheel include disk ,if so what size ? does rear wheel include gear cogs 7,8 or 9 ? what drop out width does the frame need to be for rear wheel ? what tyre is fitted ?
battery dimensions ...any 'shape' options for battery...looks long for a backpack....
brake cut outs ?
pedelec fitting on the crank...or is it just throttle assist...?
handlebar electric control unit ?

banbury a bit too far from scotland for a day trip......anyone running one of your kits in scotland ??

Hi Dave,

Firstly, you have nice bike there.

I am wondering about your reasoning for not going with a front wheel motor setup?
This is my personal preference as it gives in effect 2 wheel drive, front electric and rear pedal powered, it also gives a better balance. Of course I understand the opinion that rear motors give better traction and retain lighter steering.

eZee motors are renowned for their high torque, durability and good value for money.
See performance figures here http://www.cyclezee.com/conversion-kits.html

They are also disc brake compatible, both front or rear and a rotor is supplied with each kit. A Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyre is fitted as standard, the controller can be frame or rack fitted, front drop-out width should be 100 mm +/- 5mm and the rear 130 +/- 5mm, both a bottom bracket pedelec sensor and throttle are included.

I can supply eZee front or rear kits from stock. There is a range of eZee batteries available from 36v up to 48v and you could also have the option of carrying the battery on an MTB rack as shown the image on the left below. On the right is a front wheel conversion.

I considered this bike for a second DaaHub kit but went for the bosch to keep the wife happy;)

The Daahub would be a good fit I would think, with a discret 2.5 kg motor that works fine with disc brakes and suspension? I really advise you to try one......You already know how good the support is.......

hi, front forks and wheel fixing are unusual and would not accept a typical kit front wheel replacement ,on both width and fixing's...front disk brake is also huge.dont want to change the high end stuff on the front of the bike...... bike is for trails and climbing so rear wheel the better option for traction, and rear wheel also more standard in size and fixing....
also dont want a rack hanging off the back, battery weight far better to be in back pack for the type of terrain this bike goes on.

i have a brilliant commute bike wisper 706 alpino with front wheel hub....your kit looks more in that ball park.
this all terrain bike is a whole different ball park , needs a good high torque motor for up hill power rather than range...it goes like the wind on even a slight incline so no assist needed other than for climbing tracks (often very rough and muddy ) 'grunt' motor needed for this one..........

hi ed, dont think the daahub would be good enough for what the use is. front wheel arrangement would not be suitable for the forks. my alpino motor would not have enough torque for the hills i want to get up and would have to have the battery/controller hanging off the back as it would not fit in the triangle which is small and a suspension unit takes up a lot of the space.......
if the heinzemann can be modified to take rear disc...or a way can be found to fit v brake onto my frame, then i dont think there is a better torque motor out there.........unless someone knows different........

Best to talk to David as he has more powerful off road motors available...Its very difficult to be completely street legal and have the kinda power you seem to think you need. I can assure you my DaaHub is a completely different beastie then an Alpino! lol

there is a video on here somewhere of the DaaHub designer in New Zealand off roading the DaaHub with battery in backpack. I think it is well strong enough to withstand off road punishment even if pack fitted over rear wheel....

hi ed, thanks will talk to david.....thought the alpino motor/controller was the same as daahub, and certainly not enough uphill power on the alpino for what is required. i have tried it.....
heinzmann quoting 53 newton metres, bionx about 40 nm...... information on other motors not easy to find to compare
also needs to be rear wheel disc brake compatible

will keep searching until the right kit is unearthed......

good to hear the specialized bike is doing the business. they are fantastic machines and with motor must be amazing.........taking ebike to another level in my opinion.

when i have my 'mountain goat' i can get back into the (hilly) trails of perthshire.......

Hi Dave,

I completely understand your reason for a rear motor when climbing tracks. As for power, I think if you tried an eZee, you would be surprised at just how much 'grunt' they have in comparison to the others you mention.

I'm not sure if you saw the link to eZee performance figures I posted earlier, but here it is again http://www.cyclezee.com/conversion-kits.html

In real world terms, I find the performance of an eZee motor very similar to that of a BionX PL350 I used to own. There are two big differences though, the eZee has greater range and costs half the price of the BionX.

eZee rear motors are disc compatible and supplied with a rotor. 7, 8, and 9 speed Freewheels can also be supplied.

Hi again Dave,

Of course an eZee FP battery pack has it's own softbag for extra protection, can be carried in a backpack and has Anderson connectors fitted so it is easy to connect and quick release. A key switch is also fitted to the battery.

The 36v 10Ah battery weighs 3.2 Kg and the 36v 14Ah is 3.8Kg.

thanks, have duly noted that your kit ticks some of the boxes. have also noted 32nm torque.
cost will obviously be a consideration and the bionx does look expensive......and may not fit in the small triangle space i have.....dont want any rack system....there is a bottle carrier on the bike...battery shape to fit in that ?? i think 8fun offer one of those ???? others using the 'brick' shape on a rack , others using special unit which may or may not fit inside frame.
may have to mix and match something but reluctant to go this route...all the connections are certain to be different in every kit !!!!!!!
not easy to buy just what will be ideal

Apologies for butting in but funnily enough I tried a Specialized non -electric bike yesterday, the Expedition Sport, and really liked it.Its light and comfy but I would like to have the fallback of a motor for hills and for when I just get tired so I'm now wondering about the possibility of fitting a kit.. I spoke to Kinetic in Glasgow today and they suggested a Bionx, which they would supply and fit but I'm really looking for as much input as possible before I go ahead. My use will be pottering about on road and cycle paths -no extreme off-road stuff:) -but as I've said it can be quite hilly round here. The kit needs to be relatively light weight-so as not to take away the nice, light feel of the bike - and also quiet . Apart from trying to decide which kit, my other problem is getting it fitted if I don't buy one from Kinetic

Hi TylerD,

From what I recall you are in the Glasgow area.
If you had been closer to Milton Keynes, I would have suggested coming for a test ride on our demonstrator and bringing your own bike along so that you could have it converted if you decided an eZee kit was for you.

YouTube - ‪e bike wish list‬‏

electric bike co from edinburgh at glasgow bike show......dont know if they fit kits to your own donor bike.....
looks like the 'light' bionx version when i look at the battery. bionx have other bigger units.......
certainly looked a neat job on the one i saw....motor was quiet....

have you dealt with kinetics for anything ?
