Finding my (electric) wheels

Just about to buy an e-bike for leisure use around the Middleton-in-Teesdale area where we live and was going to buy a Cube Tour 400. However, I came across a Kalkhoff Image 500 which whilst being some £300 dearer was better equipped with a bigger battery, suspension seat, hub gears and the same Bosch motor. I was just about to buy the Kalkhoff when I checked the Trustpilot reviews and they were awful. I would really appreciate any help I can get with this as you will gather my experience is virtually zero. Many thanks.

I seem to remember that a few years ago Kalkhoff used some electrics (Impulse) that were very far from satisfactory. Google 'kalkhoff impulse motor problems'

Of course, and important thing when a mistake like that happens is how well the manufacturer deals with it. I don't know what Kalkhoff's record was on that front.

Otherwise they are a well respected brand, and I would expect their Bosch bicycles to be very good. Check when the bad TrustPilot reviews come from.

Kalkhoff are good bikes as long as they don't use the darby gmbh impulse drive, other wise you have little to worry about.
My brother has bosh kalkhoff from 2010 and still going though with a new battery.

Before you buy - go and see Billy Milburn at Esh Winning. He built my ebike up with a bafang mid drive motor and I am loving it. He is a good chap and he instantly replaced a faulty LCD module (not his fault) when black lines started to appear on the screen. He isn't that far from you. He constructs his own batteries from quality branded cells of known provenance. I can get 45 miles from my 13 AH 36 v battery if I pedal a bit and I live in a hilly area like you do. He works in a small industrial unit, converting bikes and making up batteries, and does them pretty cheap. He has done thousands of conversions by now. If you have suitable bike he will convert it for you and if you haven't he has about thirty odd bikes already done - at least he had when I went there in July.
