Is a lifeo4 24 volts 12 amp or a vrla 24 volts 12 amp going to power my electric cyclone motor for the same period and and same power?
Are Lithium-ion worth using and are they cheaper than lifeo4 batterys?
are they also the same power at 24 volt and 12 amp?
whats the best battery configuration for power and distance on a cyclone 500 watt motor?
as i have been given 2 x vrla 12 volt/12 amp batteries
how much distance should i get on full power with no pedaling with my vrla batteries?
Is the only advanage with vrla batteries the price?
Is the only advantage with lifeo4 the weight and size?

500 Watt Motor

* Max speed 3600Rpm
* Rated speed 2500Rpm
* Rated output 500W
* Max output 700W
* Rated Torque 20Kg-cm
* Max Torque 42Kg-cm
* Rated Amp 24A
* Insulation class E class
* Driver Built in
* Control method PWM
* Ambient temperature -15C~40C
* Efficiency: 97%
* weight 2.2Kg

thanks Steve:confused:

For interest I searched for Vrla 12V 12 Ah and those that I found were AGM SLA lead acid.

"Is a lifeo4 24 volts 12 amp or a vrla 24 volts 12 amp going to power my electric cyclone motor for the same period and and same power?"
No
The depth of discharge must be restricted on SLA to prevent early death.

"Are Lithium-ion worth using and are they cheaper than lifeo4 batterys?"
Yes

"are they also the same power at 24 volt and 12 amp?"
No
Lithium-ion have a higher cell voltage, nominally 26V so should have more power at the same current.

"whats the best battery configuration for power and distance on a cyclone 500 watt motor?"
24V 24Ah LiFeo4 or similar Panasonic.
For your intended usage you are likely to be pulling 30 Amps for considerable periods.

"as i have been given 2 x vrla 12 volt/12 amp batteries"
Should be OK for short distances AGM are good for short term high discharge.

"how much distance should i get on full power with no pedaling with my vrla batteries?"
Do please visit the site in the link below for practical results.
Bear in mind that he is testing a smaller motor with bigger SLA batteries.

"Is the only advantage with vrla batteries the price?"
Yes

"Is the only advantage with lifeo4 the weight and size?"
No
Greater service life.

I'm not sure that either would be suitable. Most lifepos are rated at 1C, which means they can give continuously as many amps as their capacity. So a 12ah lifepo can be run at 12 amps. Some of the more expensive ones can run at 2C, i.e. twice as much current. The motor you mentioned runs at 24 amps, so a 24v 24ah battery would be more suitable. The vrlas may give you enough current, but you won't get much range. I estimate about 5 to 10 miles depending on how much pedalling you do. Another option is lipos, which are light, cheapish and can provide as much current as you want, but the charging and monitoring procedures are much more complicated, so you need to do a bit of research first unless you alredy know how to handle them. Basically, you need an intelligent charger that monitors and balances the individual cell charging and then somethnig that'll tell you when they have reached the allowable discharge when running.
If you already have the vrlas, you could try them. They should work, but I think that you'll soon be investigating other options.

thanks for good advice and im going to charge the slva's and test them out on a long run later and i noticed on another site someone has used 36 volts batteries instead of 24 volt is that true and is the cyclone 500 motor dual voltage?

do i need a switch from the motor to isolate the battery to stop
the controller draining the battery when bike is not in use?

cheers Steve:confused:

Steve,
The controller is built into the smaller motors and I would see the controller being at risk with an increased voltage.
I have no information on the 500W but Endless-sphere forum has many postings particularly on the more powerful Cyclones.

My motor is smaller than yours but it does have an on/off switch on the throttle, whither this is an isolating switch I don't know but I tend to disconnect the battery and charge frequently.

thanks dave i will google lipo's and have a read up:D

You seriously need to know what you are doing if going down the RC Lipo route...
