Damn, I remember reading the warrenty when i bought my heavy Kryptonite Lock, I really felt that my bike was safe with such a lock.

I was just told by a friend that those sorts of locks can be opened, I said I didnt think they were, then he sent me a link, and I saw another negative link, followed by others, yet when you type Kryptonite Lock review you see all positive feedback.

I am now thinking twice about bike lock up safty.

Can I ask what locks people are using?

there are a load of threads regards security...Best use the search function:)

But I think you will find two different types of lock are recommended, as thieves need to carry different tools for different locks. A decent D lock and a chain and padlock for instance. But its all about perceived risk, if going shopping or banking etc.... I bring the ABUS D lock and I set the alarm which is reasonably loud. if leaving at say local station I will bring the heavy chain as well. I also have a long kryptonite cable for wheels, with audible padlock:p

Unfortunately lock manufacturers work hard to stop you finding out what the good locks are,. Sold Secure and similar are not reliable and if you read their claims with a legal eye then they don't claim anything much at all.
Any cable lock can be beaten easily, even if the cable is encased in armour. I have a very heavy D lock for work and home use and an 8mm chain and padlock for cafe stops. A good security precaution is to beef up your shed as bikes are likely to be nicked from your garden.

If you are looking for a decent chain and lock then I don't think you can go far wrong with Almax Almax Security Chains Limited check out their video for the breaking of ALL the 'sold secure' approved chains.

If someone wants it badly, they will get it, but I think that the Almax is probably the best you can get at the moment. They do a short chain for cycles, yes they are heavy, yes they are expensive and I would only use one in high risk areas, where it is either feasable to carry or leave on-site. Otherwise the advice as has already been provided is to use 2 different types of security devices (chain/cable/D-lock) for general medium risk areas and ensure that correct locking technique is used to make it difficult to attack the security device. Also ensure that what you are locking your bike to is sufficiently strong enough to withstand an attack.

Ensure your lock is not made of cheese also :D

P.S. A D-lock can be easily opened with a bottle jack, chain and cable with bolt croppers and cheap locks can be forced with a metal bar or screwdriver etc.

D locks are not all created equally and a good D lock the right length can be very good.
I agree about Almax though, I know one of the chaps in many of those videos and he went on a personal crusade to expose rubbish motorbike locks. Much more trustable as he wasn't paid for it and only cooperated with Almax as it was the best company he could find.

when I use the D lock I try and place it near the front stem? facing down (to prevent gluing) going through both the cross bar and the down tube. So if the want it there is no way they can get a jack in to open it, and if they cut the frame bike will be in to halves.
