Hi guys i am planning on doing my first ebike conversion .After commuting 10 miles each way to work on my cyclocross bike for the last 18 months. I have decided to try and make this a little easier. I will be converting an old scott yecora disc but am as yet undecided what kit i need as of yet so you will probably hearing from me shortly. cheers paul

Hello Paul B

I've now been 'tasked' to electrify a third bike and all I can offer is that "it all depends on what you want to end up with." Right now I'm in a quandary over this third project because the bike in question is one with (in my opinion) more gears than are ever needed.

So, I'd be interested to know what others think is reasonable gearing for an electrified bike. (This third project is to be a rear wheel drive and, whilst I'm at it, I think it would be worth changing the gear cassette to a smaller one).

I recently electrified a Brompton for my sister (the result described as "fantastic") and although she has an available 3 speeds in a the basic Sturmey Archer hub, she tells me she's never changed from the middle gear since the switch to electric power (and that's even when riding in the hillier parts of the Peak District).

It all depends on what type of terrain you ride over and how fast you want to go. I put a 7speed 11/30 freewheel on my £5 Tesco (Trax) bike. I think it has 34T on the front. I've never had to change to the smaller chain-rings despite quite steep hills and heavy weight. On my more powerful bikes, I prefer 48T on the front for relaxed 20 mph pedalling. If you fit a rear motor, you'll need a cassette one or you have to get a DNP 11T free-wheel set if you don't want to pedal like a looney.

Good point thomasy sturmey archer sounds a good option my plan was to use a bmc motor that i could peddle without no drag from the motor just to burn some calories on the way home so would probs still use my gears
