Lots of newbies ask me what to go for as a starting point when getting into E bikes.
Well, for sure if you have a half decent MTB (without suspension is just fine) then just fit a conversion kit and enjoy the lightness from the set up. I prefer the Alien kits with front wheel hub because to be quite honest they seem to be the easiest to fit without having to mess around with a decent set of gears ect.
I keep my Evans/Alien converted bike on my van for more distant touring spots but to be honest after todays outing where the weight of the bike makes it just a dream to ride on road or pathway I`m going to keep easy access to it for riding from home more. It really is worth using your existing decent MTB or buying a good quality new one for the conversion. Although my Evans is 6102 Chrome Moly it is IMHO far superior as a bike to convert than the latest Ali frames.
