Here is my latest build with the 36V 350W 255rpm 10 turn torque motor Mac rear hub and 9 FET IRFB4110 36-72V EB209 controller from Cell_man. The hub is in my old Claud Butler Pagan MTB frame with all new components:-
• Marzocchi Bomber forks with lock out
• Crane Creak S2 headset
• 185mm Avid BB7 disk brakes front and rear
• Shimano Deore Hollowtech II Chainset 44/32/22t
• Shimano Deore front & rear derailleur
• Sunrace Freewheel 8sp 13-32t
• Avid brake levers SpeedDial 7
• Deore 8 speed Rapidfire gear shifters
• Goodridge brake cables
• Homemade stainless steel torque plates
• Homemade A123 12S6P battery 39v 13.8Ah
I have not had chance to do any real in-depth comparative tests with my Dahon Espresso and the Bafang BPM rear hub conversion. On a purely superficial comparison the Mac hub appears to run quieter with less gear noise than the BPM, with almost no freewheel drag and seems to have more torque, despite drawing about 200W less peak power than the BPM hub. Although the battery voltage was a little low when I did the quick test run with the Mac @ 38V rather than the 39-40V I had on the BPM which was peaking over 1100W on steep hill loads!
The bike is lighter than the Dahon, even with the front suspension and suspension seat post. The Mac seems much more responsive; but as I say I shall have to do some more in-depth tests soon. With some health issues to contend with and guests staying with us, the testing process may be curtailed for a little while.
This is what the set up looks like so far, I will be adding mudguards and I am making a battery enclosure for the frame which will move the weight away from the back of the bike.
Video look round the setup has not uploaded to Youtube properly, so I will have to save that for another day.
