Powabyke intermittent fault

Hi all,

Hoping for any ideas on a brushed 36v x24 powabyke fault. The fault is intermittent and is as follows

1. Turn key and led handlebar lights go on and nothing more occurs at all

This happens 90% of time

Or

2. Start pedalling and then twist throttle , motor engages but only for a 2 or 3 seconds and then stops for no understandable reason

I have two batteries which both read full volts - same thing with both

Have power at controller
Have power out of lock
I've tested bypassing the lock as well - same effect
I've tried adjusting the pas ring
I've tried adding extra magnets of same size on top of the existing ones on pas (basically making stronger signal)

Any ideas

Thanks
Kirstin

I would disconnect the brake sensors first.
If the problem does not go away, I would suspect the controller.

Thanks Trex - i did think of that but couldnt find any brake sensors on this thing

I'll have another look in the daylight when i get home - as i only looked at this last niht for a while

You know that Powabykes don't work like normal ones?

Did you stop pedalling when the power came from the throttle. in one key position you have to pedal all the time.

Hi D8veh

Thanks for reply

, yes, I know they have this odd system. I keep pedalling all the time but the motor either just wont engage or only for a moment

Probrably its more like 95% of time nothing at all and 5% a few seconds enagement

There was a thread recently about this sort of thing on a Powabyke. Have a look back and see what you can find.

found it thanks - there are a couple of things there i have yet to try

worn brushes in particular seem a possible option here - not yet tested

One silly thing to check if they are SLA's, they can read pefect at no load and die instantly on load and recover close to instantly to normal voltage when the load goes off.

Thanks it these are lithium bottle batteries reading 42v

It's not the trike I've got for sale - that's perfect , this ones a bit of a mess !

The Powabyke takes a lot of current. Is your BMS tripping out?

Thanks d8veh but no BMS inside these powabyke batteries. Just Sanyo 20amp cells in 10s 3p

I will test the power at the motor whilst peddling. If it is getting there all the time but no motor is engaging (or only very occasionally) then I'm guessing it's the motor brushes

It no power at the motor, or only occasionally , then I'm guessing it's the controller or the pas sensor/signal

Probably of no help to you, but the missus' x6 trips low voltage at 33.5v (from memory) & it sagged horribly on a steep hill, causing it to effectively trip at 35v or even more.

Maybe your controller is cutting out much higher?
