Hi
I have an early x6 and the battery has given up. I thought it might be a good opportunity to up grade to 48 volts. Does anyone have any experience of doing this? I have found a battery and controller on ebay but will the motor take it or will I have to up grade the motor as well. If anyone can help that would be great

Many thanks julesw

It should be OK, but there's risks. Is yours the brushed motor? Brushed motors aren't so tolerant of over-powering because the commutators can burn. Likewise, the controllers are not so tolerant either. 48v controllers with pedal sensors are hard to find. In fact it's hard to find any brushed controllers with a pedal sensor connector.

If you have the later brushless motor, go for it.

Another idea would be to change to 12S lipos if you have the confidence to be able to manage them properly.

A word to the wise...

The early-ish powabyke x6's have a brushed motor & it pulls a lot of current on hills. I've no idea if it'll take 48v, but it definitely needs a strong battery at 36v.

I use a cyclezee 10ah flatpack on the missus' bike & eve n though they are reckoned to be strong batteries, it makes it grunt.

Her controller cuts power when it drops to 33.5 volts too, which shortens range drastically on a hilly ride.

Sadly it's a brushed motor. As for the pedal sensor that has been bypassed so that just leaves the motor might just go for the 36 volt replacement
Many thank

The early powabyke motor will def take more volts. Some years ago when I had one I considered upping the voltage as they are hopeless at 36v. Research at the time on the ES forum showed that several people were running at 70v plus. The advice was of going over about 60v to drill some large holes in the side plate to keep the motor cool.

I have a brushed motor eZee Liv which I'm converting to 48v using a straight forward throttle only brushed controller, 48v, 500w and a 48v 10a battery from BMS of similar style to the eZee one. I'm expecting to have to calm the controller down (by filing the shunt) but I see no problem with 17/18 mph at 12A from the set up.

The battery and controller are here so I'll be starting the project soon and will start a new thread.

Even that's not so easy. Make sure that you get one with a decent discharge rate, i.e. about 12 amps continuous and at least 20 amps max.

That's why I expect to have to thin the shunt down a little.

The 48v 10a "vertical, slide in battery" (which I have) should be good for 12 amp discharge Dave?

Hi
I have looked on the bms website but not sure what controller I need. How long does it normally take for the shipment to arrive, I assume they are in china.
Many thanks jules

BMSBattery only do brushless controllers. You get brushed ones from Ebay. Their orders normally take 2 weeks from order to delivery.

Should be OK, but it depends what cells are in it.

Thanks for that I have seen those on electric scooter sites and wondered if they would be suitable.
Many thanks jules
