Nice to see that the first ride on an ebike has the same effect on a Royal as the rest of us mere mortals, apprehension, puzzlement and a huge grin:D Although in the case of HRH, they appear to be in reverse order.

I like the comments below the article. Someone who signs himself, MarkTaunton is suggesting that if there is a mass take up of electric bikes, it would necessitate the building of a nuclear power station adjacent to every major city for the sole purpose of providing energy to charge the bikes. Some people really should not be allowed access to a computer, or allowed to leave their house.

Hi

Would that be fantastic No noise no pollution no traffic jams just the HUM of all those little geared motors and the odd ring off a bike bell

And lots of smiling faces all talking to each other

They are frightening individuals who speak eloquently and with great confidence on subjects for which they have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. There are a lot of them around, watch out for them, they are not always easy to spot.

Well said Tilson.

Clearly Mark Taunton is not numerate and can't do school physics. I am charging my battery today. It took me well over 50 miles - a lot of it on Max assist. It is taking 63 watts from the mains at present. This will rise a little during the 10 hour charging time. Total mains consumption to charge say 0.65kWh, or 13Wh per mile.
60 million people in the country. Let us allow them to e-bike on average 10 miles per day.
That will be 7.8GWh per day. Divide by 24 hours and we need a power supply of 325MW

325MW is the output of a modest generator at a power station. Here for example is a fossil-fueled complex with total output of about 10 times that required for my supposed 60 million ebikes.

A more serious consideration is that 60 million ebikes at say £1000 each, would cost the county £60B, assuming they were all bought from the Far East, and what is the environmental impact of all those people in China producing the bikes?

However, there will be savings, since with all this bike use, a lot of households won't need a second car. We also have petrol saving. On the other hand there will need to be a great deal land tarmaced over to provide cycle lanes. .... I think I am getting out of my depth, but a correct model needs to calculate all these aspects to determine their relative importance, before making too many claims.

As everyone here knows, electricity cost/enviromental impact is a minor consideration.
