Having now my new battery bag so that I can carry my spare on the back I thought I`d use my Powertrek untill it runs out.
Over three days leaving the bike out in a cold shed with minus nightime temps and quite cold daytime I did three trips without charging (remember carrying the extra battery weight) and I reckon I got about 20 miles spread over the three days before it died. Not sure how that compares but it has been really cold in our part of the world.what do you think??? That was mainly pedelec plus some throttle.

I`ll have to do the same with my Alien battery

How many amps is your battery? The way the temperature is your distance sounds reasonable for 8 or 10amp

Sounds to me if you got 3 days use out of the battery you dont need any longer range, just charge it every time you use it.

Like a lot of people my journey to and from work is less than 7 miles. I recently changed from using a lead acid battery to a lithium battery and to be honest I dont notice any difference. The bike is left outside my home overnight and charged at work so i never have to lift it, so weight for me is not an issue.

Did you leave the battery outside in freezing conditions Dave? 'cause 36v 10Ah is 360Wh and at 20 miles that's quite a thirsty 18Wh/mile...

I know tha in freezing condition the battery can do by up to 30% less range. I tried that on my own, when its really cold i struggle to get 25miles. We had recently couple of warmer sunny days ald already noticed my battery is performing better.

I'm afraid Eddio Wispers battery will be also affected by low temperatures.

And for 10amps battery the 20 miles in cold sounds about right.
Yeh! and as I said the journeys were spread over a few days with minus temps at night for storage. I`m no expert but I reckon if i charged indoors and went out for a ride in something like 10 degrees I`d probably land up with around 25-30 and with the extra gear I carry( I must have my comforts) that`ll do me. for longer runs I`ll just clip on my new bag:D with the alien battery and ride off into the sunset:eek: The one big saving grace of that Powertrek is that it is the most comfortable bike I`ve ever ridden(more so since fitting that crampbuster and barends.

you are right Old Timer,

if you would charge the battery indoor and keep it warm it would definitely do 25-30 miles. I also love my bike and i think its super comfortable, that means this Chinese made frames can't be that bad as many people here says:D

There seems to be confusion regarding the quality of equipment made in China. I am typing on a MacBook Pro, made in China, the quality is astounding but the machine is expensive.

The same applies to bicycle frames, if you spend £3 on a frame in china (and you can) it's very nasty, however if you spend nearly £300 (xc Tourer) you get the very best available.

China is a country that caters for all, I believe that China does not produce inferior goods but China is full of inferior buyers, trying to get unreasonable value for money, that's when the fun starts!

All the best

I'm 100% in agreement with that, and I think I may have made the point about a year ago....

I travel to West Africa, and they buy lots of stuff direct from China, but by our standards it's generally awful quality - but it's also seriously cheap. There's no doubt that market would not be available to the Chinese on any other basis. Even goods sold under the same brand name as here are seriously different, and I know quite often the same factory will have parallel 'cheap' and 'expensive' assembly lines for different markets.

They even have a highly developed Oriental sense of humour about it too - brands which are made elsewhere are sort of copied, but deliberately not exactly - I had to smile at one of the favoured makes of energy-saving lamp - the brand name was 'PIHLIPS' and apart from that deliberate (?) spelling mistake you couldn't tell the difference in the packaging - unless you noted the poor power factor, high running temperature and short life!

On my last trip I took with me a case full of electrical fittings - light sockets, power points, switches - that sort of thing. You just can't buy anything of that quality there, and coming from the UK they're highly prized - even though, you guessed it, they're all made in China.

Rog.
