As the title says, looking to replace my current rear hub motor with one that is 'legal', but has enough torque to get me up hills on my 26inch Halfords conversion. :)

I have (see pics below) a controller (17A continuos / 35A peak), and a display (KT LCD8H) with a 17.5Ah LG celled battery.

I've been looking but so far have no firm candidates and not sure who to trust, does anyone have any recommendations, looking for torque for hills and I appreciate gearing can make a difference as can messing with the Px and Cx settings in the controller.

Would be nice if I could 'open it up' for offroad riding and max power but also set it back so it's limited to 15.5mph / 4.5mph throttle etc. I know the KT can do this however it's the optimum rear hub gearing/trusted manufacturers I am struggling with, especially as I'm only looking the for the rear hub motor and wheel (not a full kit as have everything else).

Any suggestions appreciated.

Just about any 48v 250w motor will get you up hills. 35A is much too much. It'll strip the gears off any legal motor. You want 17A or 20A max at 48v. As usual, without you giving any details of you, your rides and your bike, it's impossible to make specific recommendations. PSWPower, Topbikekit, Aliexpress, Ebay and Amazon are all good sources for KT controllers. I got scammed on Amazon. I ordered a 24v/36v sinewave one and got a 36v/48v square wave one. Look out for the designation that should start "SVP" for sinewave, not "ZWS". The one you linked is ZWS, so square wave.

I'm around 12.5/13 stone, old halfords apollo mountain bike conversion.

I already have the KT controller and display (and battery), and they worked great with my current rear hub past 3 years.

What I'm looking for now is a replacement rear hub legal motor (in a 26inch wheel), so I can swap it in making the controller adjustments as requried.

Looking for recommendations on what brands/gearing to make the most out of what I have re getting torque for hills with the setup I have (52V battery btw)

Bear in mind a 52V battery is also illegal.

Woosh do a 48V hub kit

I don't know if they would just sell the motor wheel by itself

they pair it with a 48V 17A controller, so I wouldn't go above 20A - you would have to "downtune" your existing KT controller - Off the top of my head I can't remember in the parameters if you would be able to "downtune" from 35A all the way down to 20A. IIRC it is a slow winding so should be good up hills but wouldn't go much faster if you derestrict it.

Not sure about 52V - I would guess it would be OK, but 52V isn't legal

The other one I thought about is the old Wisper 705 and 905 bikes I believe had a 250W AKM128 rear hub with a 36V 17 amp controller - they do sometimes come up on ebay / marketplace with no battery / knackered battery cheap - you could just use the rear hub wheel ! - there's a 905SE for spares and repairs for £99 on ebay - not sure which motor they used - quite old
