Replacement motor controller

Finding my (electric) wheels

I have a kalkhoff with a defective motor controller (see photos). I can’t find an exact replacement so I’m thinking of buying a generic controller.
My questions are:
Will any generic controller work?
They generic ones I have seen have more wires than my bike seems to need, is that a problem?
They vary in price a lot, so what is a good make?
Although I’m willing to have a go at replacement, I’m no electrician so can anyone recommend someone to do the work?3874838749

Probably worth posting exactly which model/year the bike is.

That controller is a Bafang controller so any generic one won't be compatible with your display as they use comm's protocols between each other though some parameter's may work. Also if your bike uses a torque sensor it needs to be a specific TS controller.
As Sjpt has said please be more specific about bike model.

What has led you to the conclusion the controller is at fault ?
