Hi folks,

I've been toying with the idea of getting another ebike to use off-road, and have narrowed it down to 3 potential bikes (i think - haibike, xipi or ansmann) and was just thinking about going to test them out when my government objected to the funding of such a project and began to raise questions about cheaper options.

Now annoyingly she might have had quite a good idea, so i thought id ask advice on here as you helpful folks are usually pretty good at that.

My main complaints about the xtrem as an off-road tool is the wheels (strength particuarly - i'm heavy and hard on them) and tyres.

She asked why not just run a set of off road wheels and tyres (with the wheel containing a spare motor obviously) and switch them out.

so my question is - can i run hardcore spokes and rims laced into a motor, or am i just moving the point of failure to the motor? and can i buy a similar motor to the one in my bh for not very much money?

I still think this is flawed, and i need another bike :) but i need some comments and thoughts from you guys in the know please.

You can buy a 500w BPM or CST motor from BMS battery and lace it to any rim you want and it'll work. If your motor has the 10 pin connector near the hub, the CST would be better because it has the same connector. Your motor uses the 10th pin (white wire) to give a speed reading, so your display won't show speed; however, you can make an opportunity out of a crisis by using a normal cycle computer sensor on the front wheel (or back) to give a speed 1/5th your actual speed, which will release the speed limit to give about 22mph with the CST and probably 20mph with the normal motor.

Another solution would be to get a complete kit plus a decent battery, and build it into a proper off-road bike from Ebay. About £1000 for bike and kit should get you something really nice. Kit, battery and other bits is about £600.

dave - thats great thanks....i'll take a look at the motor wire, but think for warranties sake a new bike might be a better option.

one quick question - the white wire on pin 10 is a speed pulse directly from the motor? thats very interesting if so, as i could simply fit a km/h to mp/h converter chip and both display speed in mph and make the restriction 25-30mph instead of km/h?

The white wire pulses 5 times per revolution with 5v, if you can use a microprocessor or other electronics to slow it down to 62.5% of its speed, you'll kill two birds with one stone. Your electronics ground would have to be tied to the bike's ground. If you could come up with a device, there's loads of people on Endless Sphere waiting.

Lynda, You didn't get it. The one that controls the purse strings won't allow it. Being single does have some advantages.

Come on Dave...we both know there is such a thing as divorce, and quite frankly, when it comes to interference when choosing a new bike, well, its a bit of a "daddy or chips" moment and we all have to weigh up the decision very carefully......Ansmann ( with 4 yr motor and 3 yr battery warranty....honestly, John, the things I do for you lol ) or arsey wife ?....that is the question lol

Personally,I love being single, much fewer difficult decisions and, call me selfish, but hey, only one person to please ....... me :D :D

Lynda :)

i spent the first 40 years of my life being single, i like to thing of it as the second best time in my life ;)

to be fair, its not the purse strings, its the garage space, she seems to think that having somewhere to put it is a requirement to purchase - even suggesting my music collection should be downsized - heresy!

tempting though, but then again i've got to ride the haibike as it looks soooooooo good, and the idea of building my own bike is attractive too...

I used to be indecisive, now i'm not so sure ;)

^^ must be a right downer if you wind up having to keep paying after your Haibike's been lifted from outside the front door and you forgot to get it insured !
