Text to BBC News from a cyclist this morning

texts: Journey into Croydon from Tadworth by bike mostly ok - storm damage in Croydon worse - fallen trees and oil tanker beached on central reservation on Purley Way trying to go around a tree. Bad driving.

The final comment illustrates perfectly why many drivers regard cyclists with contempt... IMHO, of course.

I'm in Newark, Notts We had a bit of rain in the night and its raining lightly now. There's been a light wind as well but so far (and not wanting to tempt fate) its just another miserable Monday morning.

It seems the storm veered South-East, nothing much in Swindon in the way of wind....maximum gust of 29 mph at 0220 hrs.

Here at Boston Lincs, winds are about 18 to 20 MPH, with light rain. It is just after 9.00 AM. Looks like we got away lightly. Sorry for the folks on the south coast who seem to have copped it the worst.

Calmed down a lot by 8am in Brighton

Still I hit 35mph on the flat where I usually hit 24mph max !

I'm just south of Croydon on the North Surrey/South London border and the effects don't appear bad, mainly just some more leaves down and some minor branches. Being awake at some points in the night I noticed the peak of the wind was between 4.30 and 4.45am. From many years experience of wind noise/tree bending here, I'd estimate that peak to have been in the 50 to 60 mph range, half the peak of the infamous 1987 storm.

We seem to have got away lightly down here at the sharp end, but I haven't heard the local news yet.

We have scaffolding to the front & rear of the house, following some roof repair/maintenance & I was out yesterday, ropeing the top of one to the base of t'other & vicci-verci and tying down the planks, but nothing seems to have movee overnight - Unlike the scaffolding on a terrace in Islington, I think, on BBC News site.
