To alarm or not?

I have finally ordered my new bicycle (non-leccy this time, sorry  ) and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. But this was a pricey beast so I need a new lock to ensure it stays with me!

Being a modern dutch bike it comes with a frame-fitted rear wheel lock for which I can purchase a plug-in chain or cable to secure the front wheel and for use in low risk environments, but I need a new u-lock for leaving it at the station or in town. I was all set to buy this

Abus granit X Plus

when I started thinking about alarmed locks. I found this

Xena XUL210 Bullett u-lock alarm

which I thought looked pretty good.

Anyone got any experience of bike alarms in general or this in particular? Useful or PITA? Waste of cash or wise investment? Anyone got any favourites to recommend?

Thanks in advance... :)

The Abus lock you linked to is very good and I'd rather go for that than an unknown lock with an alarm. The alarm lock you link to is very poor as there's loads of space to fit a bottle jack and a thief would have it away in a few seconds leaving the alarm wailing on the floor.
I believe Flecc has a good alarm attached to his bike, that and a separate lock would be best.

I have the Abus D lock (1.5kg) and also have a 13mm pragmasis lock and chain (3.0 or 3.5kg? not 5 as in test)

Pragmasis Protector Chains Review - BikeRadar

now this really gives a feeling of security. I also have an alarm on my seat post which is loud enough to put of inquisitive scrots but you need to be within earshot, so fine for when in shops, cafes, bank etc....

but as no longer an e biker can you afford to carry the extra weight!lol

UPDATE:

Just found link to alarm its a bargain 11.99 now. very robustly constructed.

Thanks for the info guys. As to weight, the heaviest thing by miles on my bike is ME! Hence the FatMog.... :) A few extra kilos is really a drop in the lard-bucket in the overall scheme of things!

I used to think that and carried my 3Kg lock everywhere. First it broke my panniers, then it broke my water bottle holder, then it broke the tie wraps meant to take it's weight and finally it dented the frame. All this was done by repetitive little bumps in the road. When I got a new frame (nothing to do with lock damage) I gave up and left the heavy lock at work, I have a light cable lock if I need to make an unplanned stop.
