Wiring Motor for Reverse

I'd like to wire a brushless hall motor so that it runs normally in reverse.

I'm thinking that swapping the A and C phase wires should do it but would I need to swap the hall sensor wires too?

Yes, to reverse direction you need to swap both the phase and Hall wires. Often it may not be as straight forward as a like-for-like-colour swap though, as at least one controller I've come across used different Hall sensor wires to phase wires, meaning that just swapping green and blue on both, for example, didn't work.

Some controllers have a reverse connection that allows the motor direction to be changed without swapping phase and Hall wires around, worth checking to see if yours has this as it's potentially an easier way of doing this (although subject to some constraints if you use things like a three speed switch).

The easiest way is to turn the wheel round in your forks, but of course this is no good if you have a disk brake.

Only direct drive motors can actually spin backwards. Geared hub-motors have a clutch that disengages when you turn the motor backwars.

Assuming a direct drive motor with disk brake that's running OK forward: Swap one pair of phase wires and then find the correct hall combination.

Some controllers have a reverse switch or jumper.

Here's an article which explains all the theory:

Thanks guys, I should've guessed there'd be issues with this.

The motor in question is a Q100 front which I believe is geared. So it seems I'll have to take a different approach.

My intention is to use this motor as a crank drive by bolting a drive cog to the disc mount. I'm still waiting for delivery so I can't tinker yet. Anyone know if I can rebuild this motor for reverse? Maybe I could simply swap the left/right cover plates? If all else fails, I guess I'll have to drill and tap the right side for mounting.

Hi Marctwo, I guess it's an outdated thread, but it cannot be more relevant for my planned build. I was considering to use a q100h motor as mid drive using a disc cog, just like you... The goal is a portable kit that could be freely installed/removed on/from (almost) any bike within a few minutes. The best would be to use the right crank for this purpose (mounting a chainwheel on the left crank is another option), but then the motor has to be rebuilt for reverse. Did you come up with any smart solution?
Looking forward to hearing from you if you get the post!

You can by a double freewheeling rh crank from Cyclone.tw. you might be able to get them ftom Eclpse too in UK. That will allow you to use a normal rear motor as a crank drive. Cyclone do secal motors for chain drive as ell.
