Wisper 706 Alpino - No power to LED display

I wonder if anyone can advise on any simple checks for this. My wife's Wisper Alpino was working fine yesterday (it may have got wet in the rain). Re-charged the battery and now the LED display won't power-up. The lights on the battery indicate full charge. I have checked the wiring into / out of the junction box but nothing obvious there. Are there any fuses anywhere? Is there a battery in the LED display?

Do the lights come on? Check the fuse in the bottom of the battery.

It needs a 20mm 20A ceramic fuse though I'm getting away with a 10A glass slow blow one at the moment.

Thanks. The lights don't come on. I'll check the fuse out this evening.

It has a 20A fuse that I have just replaced - but to no avail. Still no power to the display (or lights). Any other suggestions?

It might be a problem with the fuse holder, the original ones were a bit naff and Wisper have been sending out replacements. I've got an old one still and the holder doesn't grip the fuse, there's a U shaped spring inside which should but doesn't hold it all together.
If it's not that then it could be a dodgy connection inside the battery, I had this problem myself and sent it back to be fixed. I had some warning though as the fault was intermittent.
Have you got a multimeter? If so then you can check the voltages on the bottom of the battery, if it's not there (with the key switched on) then it's a battery fault and will need to be sent to Wisper as you don't want to invalidate the warranty by opening the battery.

Thanks Andrew and Alistair! It does sound as if there is an issue with the output fuse holder cap (located at the bottom of the battery, not the top). Jonah, it would be best to call your supplier and request a new style output fuse holder cap. it will be sent to you free of charge. I had an identical problem on my 905sel until I changed the cap, now it works perfectly.

It was an oversight when we cranked up the power to 17A from the controller we upgraded the fuse to 30A but not the fuse holder. As soon as we realised that there was a problem we tooled up for a new very heavy duty cap that handles the power easily. All new bikes should be fitted with this upgrade and it only effects bikes bought in the last few months. If anyone has a similar problem, please call your supplier, they will probably have a stock, if not we will get one out by return.

All the best

David

I now have the bike back fixed. I changed the fuse - but no change. In consultation with the supplier (E-Bikes Direct) I carried out some further checks to no avail. They sent me a new LED Display unit but this also made no difference. As I live in Devon (200+ miles from E-Bikes Direct) it was agreed I would take it in to my nearest Wisper service centre (Bike-it in Barnstaple). They changed the control unit and finally it is fixed! My thanks to everyone for their advice and E-Bikes Direct, Wisper and Bike-it for providing a dedicated service.

I found another cause of a completely dead bike this week, a flat battery.
It seems obvious but I'd expect a little warning like an error message on the display. Nope, it died by tower bridge as if a fuse had blown.

Hi Andrew, this is a strange one, I will contact Support for you.

Just to check, the bike was working well with no loss of power with more than one bar up then it simply stopped the LCD went blank. When the bike was recharged the problem was completely rectified?

All the best David

I don't know how many bars were there as I was in the middle of riding, when I hit the first hill I noticed it went down to one which seemed low.
It went without warning and the LCD display (and lights) went blank. The charge indicator on the battery was also blank, if I left it a few minutes then the red led would light dimly and go out again as if the battery was completely drained. As soon as I started charging it was fine.
When it went I was riding on the flat, normally the first cutout comes on a hill when the battery is low.

Did you check that the fuse-holder was OK?
That was my first thought as I had to replace it a couple of weeks ago, it was fine and the soldering was all good. A visual check in the battery showed nothing obvious so I put it back together and tried the charge indicator again (still showing a dead battery), then as soon as I plugged the charger in and switched on the indicator showed it was holding the voltage. After that it seems fine.
For those of a nervous disposition I used to do similar stuff for a living so I'm safe and have a good idea of how to solder correctly. ;)

Happened again this morning. A 99% charged battery died after 20 miles, it went from being fine to completely dead with no display or lights. Fortunately it happened 200yds from work so I didn't need to put in much effort.
