I have a question for 50 cycles. If you put a cable tie around the whole tyre, surely that will create problems with the brake block snatching at it? Just a thought. Tomt.

Not if you have disc brakes....

I find the biggest problem on ice is slipping sideways, I'd expect the zip ties to make that worse.

The nobbles on the zip ties, alternating on either side, should help with that. But yes, it'll only work with disc brakes if you plan to stop at any point on your journey.
