Ongoing reliability of Kalkhoff/Focus Impulse 2 motors
Not sure what you mean by software extra but there's a wheel size setting that I could have changed to fool the bike into thinking it had smaller wheels which would have raised the assistance cut off from 25kph to a higher value. However, as has been endlessly discussed in this forum, this would then change the category of the bike, and I never intended to change this, just update the motor software to the latest level.

OK, the SD card with 1.345 on it arrived on Saturday and I've just done the update, again very quick and easy, but you have to remove and replace the battery after the update to reboot and only then does the service unit show the updated level of software. So I'm now on the latest level, bike rides fine.

I'm sure I can't think what you mean.

Ongoing reliability of Kalkhoff/Focus Impulse 2 motors
Having called Joe at 50cycles after last week's efforts, he said to try the update again as sometimes it takes a couple of tries to 'stick'. I've updated software and firmware on a lot of things in my life and never found it not sticking - but tried again this morning. Confused. Last week, when I powered off and removed the battery from the bike and put it away, the service unit had said I still had 1.302 installed. When I reconnected the service unit this morning and put the battery back on the bike, before I did anything else I checked the sw level again - and it said 1.344! I'd done nothing at this point since last time, which leaves me thinking that either the service unit was giving me duff info before I powered it all off last week, or that the new software didn't boot into the motor until I reconnected the battery and service unit this morning. Confusing either way. And it was 1.344 now, not 1.345 as it should be. So I tried the update at least three more times, including: 1. Simply checking the level after the update without disconnecting anything. 2. Removing the battery and replacing it after the update, with the service unit still connected. 3. Removing the battery, disconnecting the service unit, reconnecting the bike display, replacing the battery and powering the bike on, then removing the battery again and reconnecting the service unit. In all cases the motor software level stayed stubbornly at 1.344, so I called Joe again and agreed that perhaps the service unit didn't have 1.345 on the installed sd card. He's going to get another sd card to me with 1.345 on. Fingers crossed :-)

Well I've just done the update as per instructions, very quick and easy to do. However, the information displayed after the update has confused me, because my motor seems to have the same level of software as before the update - 1.302 from Feb 2014. I've emailed 50cycles support for advice.

I had a good phone conversation with Joe from 50cycles support last Friday who shipped the Impulse diagnostic and update box to me yesterday - it arrived today with instructions. I will do the software update later this week when time allows.

Today I did something I've been meaning to do for a while, and used online chat to 50cycles.com to ask about the software update that's available or Impulse 2.0. I pointed out that I lived near Portsmouth and that getting to Shoreham would be very difficult, and they said they can send out a box with instructions that will enable me to do the update myself. I await more info next week.

Kalkhoff back light not working
Ok, it's working again. I took off the rear light and removed the connector. It's a Busch & Muller Toplight Flat Plus http://www.bumm.de/fileadmin/user_upload/Anleitungen/329d.pdf The connector isn't ideal, in that it simply squashes the two wires against the two connectors. One of the connections didn't look that brilliant to me, so I remade both and replaced it and it now works fine.

Kalkhoff back light not working
I have a Kalkhoff Pro Connect 10, with front hub dynamo and automatic lights, and on my ride home this evening I discovered the rear light wasn't working. I'm sure it was the last time I rode in the evening - which was a few months ago. There aren't any switches on the back light. Has anyone else had a problem with similar lights?

Question about tyres
I have a Kalkhoff Pro Connect Impulse 10, bought in June last year. The tyres are Scwalbe Marathons, 28 x 1.50, (40x622) and the rims just say 'Concept' - I *think* they are Shuemann Concept SDR light rims, as the Kalkhoff website for the 2015 model mentions Concept SDR. If I read the Shuemann web site correctly, these are 19mm internal width. The tyres are road tyres I know, but since getting the ebike my enthusiasm for cycling has increased and I'd like to ride some of the easier unmade tracks and country path trails round here (just north of Havant). I'm not talking steep or rutted, just rough and a bit stony. I've done this but I would feel more secure I think on slightly wider tyres with a more pronounced tread. I find the whole rim and tyre business a bit confusing! Looking at the Scwalbe web site, they do a Marathon Mondial which is ebike ready, and which says it's good for road, track and trail, and it does look like it has a more suitable tread pattern. With the rims I have, would I be able to use say, a 28x2.00 size of this tyre on the Concept SDR rims? That's assuming they would fit inside the mudguards and back fork. It looks to me like I have the room.

Part Exchange....
Thanks guys. Doesn't sound like px is common practice which is what I expected. I was just thinking ahead to possibly next year, while mine is still under guarantee, maybe selling and buying something in a different style in the light of my experience with my first ebike. More MTB, less pure road bike. It's given me a new interest in cycling and trying some of the green lanes and tracks around my way which I can't do on the current bike.
