bbs02 power cutting out
OK finally got a new battery and that has fixed the issue. Got a lovely little 7ah bottle battery (my commute is 1 hour round trip) weighs a bit less than 2kg. But why do they always drill the mounts for a bottle cage battery that do not line up with standard bottle cage size. They are no-where near

bbs02 power cutting out
OK thanks for the replies. I ran it on the throttle with the wheel up in the garage, different gears and PAS for about 20 minutes and all works fine. Put it with me on it on the road and it cut out as before, obviously more load. The volts from the digimeter read 41 (is 36v but I guess it could be a bit out). So from the advice it looks like it is the battery though the connections are ok, or I guess it would cut out when throttling with the wheel up. So what is happening is it because it is a heavier draw on the battery and the battery cannot take it or something else? Just trying to understand the theory I don't know much about electronics.

bbs02 power cutting out
I have a bbs02 motor that I have ridden about 8500 Kms with. It is a 350w 36v. This week the power has started to cut out. I haven't had any problems before. When riding on the flat Pas 4out of 5 and changing to 5,6,7 out of an 8 gear bike everything shuts off. Nothing on the display or light on the gear change module. It is as though the battery is turned off. If I turn the battery switch off and on and then restart the motor it continues but only for a very short distance then it is gone again. Any ideas? I rewired the connections from the battery and contact is good there. Is it a controller issue or battery? The battery is younger than the motor/controller by about a year. No errors on display. I really don't know where I should start.

Expected lifetime of a BBS02
Hello thanks for the response and handy information. I did reprogram my controller to make it more responsive after changing gear/braking and also so that it does not drop so much power when paused (changing gear/braking). This made a world of difference to the motor allowing me to ride a lot more dynamically through the city. Before it was only really any good a long rides in top gear with no interruptions (such as traffic, lights, junctions etc) which is not my commute (being through a city). So personally I would recommend a reprogram on the BBS02 but it depends on the situation of the user as you suggest.

Expected lifetime of a BBS02
Nealh thanks for the info. I have done about 2300 miles so far. I did strip it and grease it once. I did reprogram the controller at about 1000 miles so that it was more responsive but nothing too extreme. It seems ok so far but I am starting to feel a bit of stutter through pedaling when the motor first kicks in but it might just be the chain taking up the slack.

Expected lifetime of a BBS02
Thanks for the response and info. What does it feel like when the pawls for the clutch or the magnet ring go? What is the impact to the riding? Basically how do I know if one of these things might be on the way out?

Expected lifetime of a BBS02
Hello. I have a Bafang BBS02 350W I was wondering what is the, average, expected lifetime of this motor, does anyone know? How many miles/KMs before it might explode or fail :-) What is the most common failure? Drop in power or speed in reaction or?

IGH gears vs. derailleur
Yeah forgot to add the adjustment is so much simpler on IGH than it is on derailleurs. None of this A and B screws and cable adjustment. On Alfine you just match up the yellow lines in the little window (on an Alfine 8) by adjusting the cable length at the gear change and you are good to go. Once they are set I have never needed to re-adjust even after 6000 + km. I did have to rebuild the wheel though because the rim wore out from the V-brakes. I think the Rholoff would be the ultimate but the price is crazy. I am very happy with the Alfine 8 (501 better clutch than the 500) and they just brought out a new one which is supposed to be even smoother.

IGH gears vs. derailleur
I like planetary/internal gear hubs. I have fitted then on 3 bikes so far. One on my electric with a Bafang 36v 350watt BBS02 on a 29inch mountain/hybrid bike. The hassle with them is you have to build your own wheels really. What I like about them is the ability to change gear any time you like, the low maintenance and the smoothness of the gear change. I can get derailleurs super smooth but they need cleaning every couple of months to keep them super smooth and then tweaking and then the jockey wheels go. So for me I find them too much hassle. With hubs the maintenance is minimal, a soak in transmission fluid every couple of years or less. The fact I can stop in 8th gear and pull away in 1st is a real bonus for me. All my riding is inner city commute so loads of emergency stops. You can get a nice straight chain line also. People complain about the weight. For me it makes no difference as my luggage is 2kg plus anyhoo.

Chainline offset for BBSHD and hub gear - how much is too much?
Yeah i have angled dropouts not horizontal. The bike was originally a mountain bike with derailleur gears. I thought for horizontal you could use a BMX style chain tensioner. Google throws up loads. I think they work by pulling the wheel back. Not sure if it would work in your situation or not. The spring loaded things are more for converting derailleur type bikes to single speed in my experience.

Chainline offset for BBSHD and hub gear - how much is too much?
I have an Alfine 8 with a BBS02. With the alfine rear sprocket you can flip (plastic cover is then on the inside) it so it sits further from the wheel making a cleaner chainline. I have a couple of chain guides left over from other builds. One is a Gusset that sits in the old derailleur hanger and the other I have up near the chainring. I use a singulator on another, non-electric, bike and difficult to fit but very good once done. This is the gusset: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ch/de/gusset-bachelor-ss-kettenspanner-/rp-prod17724 And I have one of these up near the chain ring http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/be/en/brand-x-chain-tensioner/rp-prod10137 This setup works well for me (I have a dodgy damaged BBS02 also so the chainring is at a bad angle to start with). For you you would probably do alright with the singualtor, it is a bit pricey but works. http://surlybikes.com/parts/drivetrain/singleator

BBS02 where to grease for service
Nice shot brightonebikes. I got the aeroshell 22 which another thread said was ok to use as good as the mobil, it is a different colour though more beige. I guess that is as good.

BBS02 where to grease for service
Fordulike adding grease to the final drive would be a start. But can you tell me what is the final drive and how to get to it. I presume it is the last cog that drives the BB but how do I get to it? tommie thanks for the link great blog.

BBS02 where to grease for service
I have a BBS02 mid drive motor that is about time for some service. I read on another thread in here somewhere about service intervals. I have acquired some aeroshell 22 grease but I am not sure what I should be greasing where? Do I dismantle the motor on the chain ring side or the left?

Rohloff/gearbox question/s!
Personally I love planetary gears. I commuted with a variety of shimano derailleurs over about 2 years, about 6000 km, and I always needed to clean or the jockey cogs wore out so changing became pants. Also in the city so lots of gear changes on each ride. I went for an Alfine 8 speed and it changes everything for me. My maintenance schedule was severly reduced and I have not had to replace it , changed the oil in it once and done about 9000km on it no worries. For me that and the change gear when stopped just kills the derailleur for me. Currently thinking about putting one on my BBS02 electric. I don't see why it would cause a problem if anything I should get a smoother chainline.

Cross Bar battery
ooh this looks like it might do the job, minimum qantity 10 though :-( https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/whosale-high-power-triangle-battery-48v_60469259363.html?spm=a2700.7724857.0.0.WxIw4k Edit: Looking at the dimensions though this takes up the whole frame triangle which is not really what I am looking for. I wonder if the behind the seat post down tube would fit on the crossbar.

does anyone produce a cross bar mounted battery? Either mounted above, below or around even?

Keeping the display dry, is it needed?
Hello. I have a Bafang C965 display. I read in one of the manuals that this is water resistant but not water proof. Is this correct (only resistant) and is it something I need to worry about? Will the thing malfunction if it gets too wet in the rain? If so how do you keep yours dry? I rode with my pedelec for the first time in the wet and all went well until I tried to turn the battery off at the end of the ride, it was very wet, I just could not turn it off. Returning an few hours later it functioned normally. I guess this is related to water in a connection somewhere?

Use of gears and pedal assist
Thanks for the responses, fantastic as ever. The main thing I had was changing down gear too low meant my chain line was out (I have a damaged bafang where the bottom bracket is bent in, mentioned in another thread). So if I am in low gear the gear change slips a few times, then chokes and then chain fell off. I fitted a Kore chain tensioner that I had sitting around from another project and this has fixed it for now it seems so I can go into low gears without the chain coming off. Now I tried like Emo Rider suggested to ride like I would with a normal bike: low gear when uphill, wind or starting, and it does seem better than trying to push on in high gear. Although I do find 1st and 2nd pretty useless and I never seem to get over 6th, on an 8 speed cassette. So maybe a closer grouping on the cassette might be more use.

Use of gears and pedal assist
Hello. I am wondering how you guys use your gears? I have a centrally mounted motor with shimano 8 speed derailleur. I am trying to figure out how to get the most out of the pedal assist with gears. Sometimes it seems just leaving it in 5th is the best performance for cycling along and starting off, not much benefit to changing down gear. I can't help feeling I am missing the point somewhere. So wondering do you change down for hills, or when you come to traffic lights to pull way easier? Or are gears generally just used to go faster? I have set pedal assist to 5 step? Is this common or do you guys find it overkill and just stick with 3?

bafang C965 display - set wheel diameter
I have a C965 display for my Bafang BBS01. I cannot find how to set the wheel dimension on the thing. The documentation I found online says that I can enter a settings menu by double press on the power button. This does nothing but if I press the plus and minus buttons together I get to some kind of settings menu but not the same one as in the manual. When I click the plus and minus buttons together I get these menus that I can rotate through by pressing the power button: tC - with y/n options , anyone know what tC is used for? What does it set? bL - back light I presume S7 - sets km or mph OFF - auto time off. So nothing to do with wheel diameter. I am also expecting speed limit, password, and voltage settings but cannot find these either. Any idea how to get access to these settings? Or do I need a usb cable or something?
