Q128C freehub replacement
Aye, I'll definitely be doing that when the new cover arrives. I have a large tub of copper slip, which feels like a lifetime's supply, so it'll be getting applied fairly liberally!

Q128C freehub replacement
Mechanic made a lever from a strip of what looks like 5mm strip steel, and it was still a pig to get off apparently

Indeed! Will reserve final judgement until they arrive, but assuming that all goes ok then they deserve to get more trade for this

Q128C freehub replacement
So, I'm really happy to report that, following a recommendation above, I got in touch with Topbikekit to see whether they could order this part from AKM. And indeed they can! I sent them photos of what I was after, they got onto AKM and came back really quickly with the offer of a motor cover and freehub (see photo) for 13USD each, plus shipping. Result!! 34.jpg (205.37 KiB) Not viewed yet They did also point out the difficulty of removing the motor cover, and I was able to assure them that I knew about that, but the problem had been overcome thanks to the mechanic in my LBS. All being well a couple of these parts will be arriving with me soon (seemed worth doubling up, when the shipping was 28USD ) and I look forward to the resumption of trouble-free ebiking soon. Anyone else in the same predicament as me and who doesn't want to splash out on a while new motor, I highly recommend TBK, they seem great.

Q128C freehub replacement
The original problem was the freehub seizing briefly (so that it didn't coast properly), which I think is an issue that others have had. A bit of TLC and that was rectified for a while at least. However a couple of weeks ago it went the other way and lost all drive - the pedals were spinning madly, but the hub wasn't engaging. My LBS mechanic gave it a good servicing (see pictures of the state it was in when he did so), but it's wearing out and needs replacement - for example the bearing race isn't in a very good state. Pawls can be replaced, but i'm told they're not all the same (as with so much in the bike industry), so it can be trial and error to find some that would be OK. I've sent a message to Aikema to see whether they can supply a freehub on its own, but I've also spotted this on greenbikekit, which looks remarkably similar: https://www.greenbikekit.com/bafang-fatbike-rmg06-motor-cover-with-cassette-base.html I might give that a go - it would be cheaper than buying a whole new motor.

Q128C freehub replacement
Thanks for the quick replies. Leaving aside the cost consideration of a buying a new motor just because the freehub is shot, I generally prefer to repair rather than replace (e.g. inner tubes) Nealh, the LBS told me they blowtorched the area (from the inside of the cover, once they'd got it off - which was after they'd fab'd a lever for the job, and it still took 2 of them to get it off) before it unscrewed, but it came off with the same 2-pronged tool that you use to take out the bearings and service/ replace them. Good point about AKM in house design - i'll get in touch and see it they can ship any separately. Otherwise (failing the final option of a new motor) it's going to be a question of doing as much as possible with the pawls and bearings to keep the freehub going - it's developed a nasty tendency of skipping/ slipping, which isn't nice when it happens as you're pulling away at traffic lights or junctions

Q128C freehub replacement
Hi again, resurrecting this post. After 10,000 miles of faithful service the freehub on my Q128C finally gave up the ghost a couple of weeks ago. Long story, but my LBS mechanic has managed to remove it - unlike other posters, who say it just slides off, this one was actually screwed to the motor body - hence no amount of pulling was ever going to get it off. Mechanic says it's like nothing he's ever seen before - I've posted his photos of it. Does anyone recognise this, and if so can they suggest where we might source a replacement? Someone elsewhere has suggested it might be a Bafang freehub?

Q128C freehub replacement
Thanks Nealh, I've seen the thread where you and D8veh talked about that. I hope I have an easier time when it finally comes to it. And thanks too wheeliepete, let's hope you're right about compatibility

Q128C freehub replacement
Whoops, spoke too soon. Those links are all cassettes, I was asking about the freehub body. How easily can replacements for that be obtained?

Ah that's great to hear, thank you.

Q128C freehub replacement
Hi all, I've had my ebike serviced today (5000 miles and going strong ), and the mechanic reckons I might need to source a replacement freehub before too much longer. Does anyone know what would be compatible with the Q128C please?

advice on connectors please
Hi there, my conversion project is making progress, so I'd welcome some advice now on making the connections to the controller, specifically the battery cables and the motor phase wires. I read on another thread about the perils of poor connections, and that generally bullet connectors aren't highly thought of. What's a good alternative for the relatively high current battery cables? I've no knowledge in this area so I've been doing some googling and come across mention of an EC3 connector, which looks as though it might be suitable. Another possibility seems to be a KT60? I'd prefer not to simply solder, as then the battery will be permanently connected to the controller unless the wires are cut. Also are there any suggestions for the 3 phase wires from the motor? Although I might just solder those anyway, since there's already a connector at the other end (the waterproof 9 pin plug). Thanks in advance

arrgh!! wrong motor - now what?
Thanks for the recommendation, my mechanic was asking if I had any ideas, so I'll pass that on and see what he thinks. He suggested plain gauge spokes though, which the alpine 3s aren't?

arrgh!! wrong motor - now what?
Thank you for the reassurance. I have my friendly local bike mechanic lined up for the week after next to lace the motor into a good strong rim, so one that's done and I've got the battery and controller I can check out the no-load speed and report back

arrgh!! wrong motor - now what?
Thanks for all the replies. I was inclined to offer it up for sale (would take £75 plus £15 postage), but perhaps in the interests of research for the benefit of the forum as a whole i'll go ahead with it, particularly as d8veh reckons it's probably the same (or near as dammit). If it's not, well then I guess I'll get another motor in due course. I've already got a 14A controller on the way, but not ordered the battery yet. I was planning on the 48V 12Ah one from Eclipse (with the Samsung 30Q cells) - is that still sensible (probably a dumb question, but better safe than sorry, particularly given the amount at stake). Finally, if it's found that they are the same motor, then should this recommended kit combination of Q128 36v 201rpm with 48V battery be amended for future converters?
