News, Reviews and 2016 Catalogue I have been thinking about getting an e-bike for a few years but cycling friends implied I would be going over to the dark side if I went electric, what a fool I was to wait. This bike is fantastic, when I am riding home from work, uphill into gale force winds I am feeling no pain. On the flat I don't need to use any of the 3 power modes, even uphill the Eco mode is usually more than enough. Delivery was fast and easy to assemble basically just attach the pedals, very comfortable sprung saddle and forks, no downside everything about it is a joy. Why did I wait? John Reilly, Tasman owner The past year has been a memorable one for 50cycles with great new people joining the team in our showrooms and headquarters. It's also been a year of exciting new electric bicycle models, record sales and glowing reviews like John's. Our 2016 Catalogue arrived in our showrooms in time for Christmas and it's also now available todownload as a PDF if you'd like to see what's in store for the new season. This year we were able to deliver next season's bikes to early bird customers for the first time. So there are people already enjoying entirely new models from the 2016 Kalkhoff range or the latest version of established models like the Agattu and Pro Connect. We would like to offer a 5% discount on all online orders for 2016 Kalkhoff and FOCUS e-bikes placed from now until 23:59:59 GMT on Friday 1st January 2016. You or a friend or relative can claim this discount by applying the voucher code FF5 when checking out on our website. This means, for example, a saving of £229.75 on the new Focus Thron Speed, £144.75 on the 2016 Include Premium and reduces the 2016 Agattu 8 Premium Belt from £2595 to £2465.25. All prices include VAT & delivery and are based on the current website price. FF5 cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer, or applied to an existing order. 5. Fresh reviews, new Friends & Family discount code and keep 'em peeled for stolen Kalkhoffs http://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/ebikemagcover300_zc_v7_8972000010066186.jpg Kalkhoff's latest models are making headlines and grabbing front pages lately. The 2016 Kalkhoff Integrale 8 LTD is the cover star of the current issue of the revamped Electric Bike Magazine. It has earned its place with its massive power and state-of-the-art navigation capability, as well as its good looks. We still have a small number of this one-off edition of this model left in stock. We also feature inside with a full page advert and a contribution from Lucy, Glastonbury Festival's Green Initiative Coordinator, on why the organisers and security teams use our electric bikes in the run-up to the event. "They are perfect in the field when there are a smaller number of people on site and you get to fly around from place to place without the restrictions of a clunky Land Rover. "Also, as your energy levels deplete as the show draws closer to its last day, the electric gives you the extra boost you need to get up those hills back to office", explained Lucy after this year's Festival. Kalkhoff Integrale makes journalist King of the Mountain http://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/strave_kom_zc_v8_8972000010066186.jpg Another Kalkhoff Integrale made a big impression on Oliver Bridgewood from Cycling Weekly. It also made him King of the Kitzbuheler Horn in the Austrian Alps for a day. Oliver's report is an interesting insight into the mindset of the competitive road cyclist, those who live or die on Strava, and how electric bikes have the power to stir things up. You can read his full report here . Finally, US website Electric Bike Review took the 2015 Tasman Classic out for a video review, awarded it 9.5 out of 10, saying "this bike is awesome... and pretty. It's in a class of its own in the US right now" (and everywhere else). We have this model in stock in red, black and white. You can watch the review on our Tasman Classic Page . Most satisying of all have been the most recent customer reviews you've sent in, here are three of the latest, all for in-stock models. Pro Connect Impulse 10 "Well I took the plunge having read practically every review. I ordered the Pro connect impulse 10 this Monday and took delivery today. I would simply say the reviews are correct, the service by 50 cycles was very good and the bike goes like a rocket. Even without a battery/motor it's quick add the power I managed 18MPH on the first trip and I've been off a bike due to illness for a year. I suspect when I get fitter, the ride is going to get better. Brilliant." Pro Connect Impulse 9 "The bike is a delight to look at and a pleasure to ride... regularly going out 3 times a week. In 2 months I have done over 600 miles. I live in a fairly hilly area and a 30 miles ride uses less than half the battery... I cannot praise the staff at Loughborough highly enough. All in all this is one of the best buys I have ever made." Jarifa 27R 2.0 http://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/jarifa2_zc_v10_8972000010066186.jpg "All in all this bikes epic and fast, ok you need to pedal a bit but come on it's a bike so it's supposed to happen. Anyone interested in getting one really should go ahead as it's just brilliant fun on two wheels. I really can't wait for work tomorrow and I've never said that in my life. When the weekend comes I'm going to hit some serious trails. My advise is get one and be extremely happy you won't regret it." £100 Owners' Friends & Family Discount FFAUG15 Bought a bike recently or a long-time owner? Do you know someone who might enjoy riding an e-bike too? What if you could recommend one of our bikes and even offer a way to save a few pounds? Quite a few, actually. You can! We've created a voucher code you can share that's worth £100 off any Kalkhoff electric bike model from now until the end of August 2015. The code is FFAUG15 and is valid on any order including an electric bike ordered through our website, over the telephone or in one of our 50cycles showrooms. If you have any problem with using the code on our website, please call 0333 900 5050 and we'll help you apply it to your order. We are issuing this code on the understanding you are already a 50cycle customer and own a Kalkhoff electric bike or pedal cycle, and you will share it with close friends and family but that it is not for general distribution online or in social media. Finally... stolen bikes alert http://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/thieves1_zc_v6_8972000010066186.jpg We've had a bit of bad luck with stolen bikes this week. First, a shipment from Germany of 55 bikes was robbed in East Anglia, with 23 taken. The following day a air of opportunist thieves walked into our shop and out again with a black Sahel Compact - we caught that on our own shop cameras, with clear images of both their faces. This is the first demo bike we've had stolen in the 12 year we've been in business. Please be on the lookout for Kalkhoff bikes appearing for sale through unusual channels - gumtree, ebay, car boot sales, markets... if it's too good to be true, it's probably stolen. Please drop us a line with a link or other information and we'll follow it up.
  6. Fair enough
  7. It's the first ever Sky Ride Bristol tomorrow, 21st June, between 11am and 3pm, along a traffic-free route around the city centre. What makes the traffic-free Sky Ride events great is that they're for cyclists of all ages and abilities. 50cycles very much believes that's what cycling should be about - fun but practical, a mode of transport but also a way of life. We'll have a stand in the marketplace area and some of the latest 2015 Kalkhoff and Focus electric bikes for you to see and ride. Anthony and Scott on hand to tell you all about them. Our Bristol Sky Ride blog post has more information about test rides and the route, which runs for just under 5 miles (7.5km) around Bristol's landmarks. http://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/2635_w1000_b_zc_v2_8972000009615004.jpg
  8. We're really not into them. We won't support bikes found to have had them fitted and Kalkhoff and FOCUS won't either. The bikes are designed to perform within the limits they're designed and supplied for, and spec'd accordingly (brakes, tyres, even lighting). Exceeding that is likely to harm battery, motor and possibly rider. Also, dongles appear to be priced at rip-off levels.
  9. We used to sell something similar a long time ago, here's what I found on an old spec sheet Lithium-ion, Rear Rack Mounted, 24V / 10AH Pack, (7) 3.7V Rechargeable Cells, Advanced BMS, Extra Energy and UL + CE Safety Tested UL Listed Li-ion Smart Charger with LED Status Display Exclusive Currie Electro-Drive®, 24 Volt Fully Potted with Power Gauge Function 818 734 8199 izipusa.com I sales@izipusa.com
  10. BH is a funny one. They did a cracking folding Panasonic bike but, as you say, there were 'problems'.
  11. Aye, that is a tasty bike, no doubt about it. Like I said, the Haibike 2011-vintage was a beauty and absolutely the first of its kind, but it was first generation Bosch and disappointed. I wanted it to be amazing and to sell hundreds of them. I had to wait until last year before FOCUS sorted out a proper full suspension Impulse 2.0 bike and that was the first e-MTB to grab me.
  12. Preferred by whom? Look up the FOCUS e-MTB reviews. They more than hold their own against Bosch and Yamaha, and with greater battery capacities. The Stromer goes 'all the way up' and looks cumbersome. http://www.50cycles.com/assets/images/12/1432127200_khe16_integrale_8_ltd_he1-hpr.jpg http://cdn3.bigcommerce.com/s-6ahcroh/products/1033/images/1772/Screen_shot_2014_09_12_at_12.27.01_PM__22225__45222.1421791663.1280.1280.png?c=2
  13. To be fair, it was their first crack at it back in 2011. It looked amazing, all white and blue and purposeful looking. A full suspension crank drive all-terrain bike! But out on the ride it really disappointed me. I gave up.
  14. Kalkhoff still offer Bosch models but we won't be ordering any. FOCUS have dropped them completely. I can honestly say the Haibike FS Enduro was the most boring electric bike I have or will ever ride. Going around Richmond Park on that thing felt like taking an Accountancy exam, but with inferior seating arrangements.
  15. If you're in Hebden Bridge, there are Kalkhoffs to try in Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles 35 West End Hebden Bridge West Yorkshire HX7 8UQ Available to demonstrate: Kalkhoff Agattu Premium Impulse 8, 46cm step-thru with 28" wheels
  16. Only a 500Wh battery and no integrated battery for 2016? Try 612Wh as standard and 100Nm. Bosch have lost the plot. http://www.50cycles.com/electric-bikes/impulse-evo/ http://www.50cycles.com/assets/images/12/1432127200_khe16_integrale_8_ltd_he1-hpr.jpg Yes, that's a belt drive. And Kalkhoff have designed the whole system to be 50% quieter than anything else out there.
  17. Because they're great bikes, obviously. The best you can buy in fact, on any measure. How on earth would we orchestrate completely independent support? You think we're paying people to buy our bikes and then post on here?
  18. Well, you can get a Tasman 8 with Impulse 2 for £1995 or 10% off that and all the 2015 range with the voucher code JUNE10 until the end of this month. So that's £1795.50 for a fully-loaded 17Ah Impulse 2.0 bike.
  19. More on them here http://www.50cycles.com/electric-bikes/impulse-evo.html It's a bit of a sore subject. I ordered a 55cm Integrale S11 for myself, but it's been sold from underneath me so I'm not going to ride one until later in the year now. We were told 80Nm in the presentation in Cologne earlier this year, but the new gears will go up to 100Nm. And the Integrale has this incredible dual headlight on the front of it and an ULTRA POWER mode. The satnav feature is clever. Rather than encumber the console with navigation software and all the computing overheads like the disappointing Bosch Nyon system, it hands over all the navigation heavy lifting to the supercomputer in your pocket, your smartphone. Much better way to do it. They look like this http://www.50cycles.com/assets/images/12/1432127200_khe16_integrale_8_ltd_he1-hpr.jpg
  20. Ssssh! You're not supposed to being seeing them yet! http://www.50cycles.com/electric-bikes/impulse-evo.html We are taking pre-orders. A lot of them are earmarked already. A few S11 left, but low single figures now. I wish we'd ordered more. Oh, there's only 1 S11 left available, just checked. Plenty of S10 though. Good question on the FOCUS Impulse Evos, I don't think that's going to happen this season.
  21. Efficiency is an area Kalkhoff's engineers are taking very seriously. At a recent meeting they told us that they're going for 'automotive levels' of quality and efficiency now. This is manifesting itself in much quieter motors in the latest Impulse generations, which is a good sign of efficiency through the entire propulsion system. I remember some of the old planetary-geared hub motor bikes I used to ride (especially front hubs) would 'sing', sometimes very discordantly and with a fair bit of vibration through the handlebars, as the power output increased. Once up to top speed that noise had mostly gone, but in the middle there was clearly a lot of energy being audibly wasted. Direct drives, on the other hand, are almost always silent.
  22. The poster also has an upper second class degree from Oxford University but, like all other human beings, makes the odd grammar mistake now and then, despite being an insufferable stickler for correct grammar himself. I share your view about how important this is, RobF. I'm mortified. If you could go over all my previous posts on here, all the copy on the 50cycles.com website and all my blog posts, making a list of all the grammar mistakes as you go, I would be genuinely grateful.
  23. Yes, I know that, a mistake after a long day at the keyboard. I have GCSEs and everything, but thank's for your help!
  24. Hello, thank you for your order and feedback on Bristol too. Anthony there has been an excellent addition to our team. PS You could list your eZee on our Used eBikes pages too http://www.50cycles.com/electric-bikes/used-ebikes.html
