Any Recommendations for Commuter Bike?
I dont have a weight comparison but no i dont find it an issue. I do Aberdeen close to ARI Hospital (Home) to Westhill (Work). Its very open on the cycle path so you get quite a lot of wind , especialy kingswells to westhill. A Wisper would eat the hill from Haudegen to BOD no problem. It wouldnt be too fast but compared to a normal bike you wouldnt break sweat. Its ideal for that type of run.

Any Recommendations for Commuter Bike?
Hi I have had a Wisper 905SE Sport for about a year now and although i have to admit it is my only experience in electric bikes it is very impresive. Not cheap but impresive all the same. Bike looks good and for hills it great... leaves the lycra boys in your dust:) My biggest issue which is not a Wisper problem is that much of my journey is flat and offroad where i end up pushing the bike faster than the power will take it which means i am doing the work to carry the battery and motor about.... stupid laws!!! My trip to work is about 7.5 miles each way but i do shower when i get there. The bike will always do a round trip without issue and there is still power left in the battery (14Ah) but i charge it after each round trip anyway. For your route where there is a lot of hill climbing, i am sure a Wisper would be great. Its on flat roads where they run out of puff, as i am sure most e-bikes do that i have my issues. I see you are up in Aberdeen ... so am i ... get in touch and perhaps i can let you have a run on my bike. Cheers Gordon

How can I speed up my Wisper 905 SE Sport
Hi folks Ok, what I had hoped to be able to do was to modify the 905SE Sport and get an extra few mph out of it for my long flat off road section. Don’t get me wrong, the bike is great for going up hills etc its just that for them main part of my journey I am cycling along the flat, off road section at about 19-21 mph so I am carrying the battery and motor rather than it helping me. I am sure I saw a larger motor on a Wisper bike about a year back when I was looking to buy my bike, possibly a 500W but I cant find one online and the Wisper guys in the UK cant supply anything above street legal which I assume is just their policy. The motor on my bike is stamped with BFY809B12983-28KM 36V 200W and the bike is the last of the kettle plug type battery connectors with the cable connection box mounted in front of the handle bars. Can anyone help me with either suppliers of alternative parts for the bike to gain a bit more speed or suggest a way of modifying the existing bike. I would also like to know how the bike knows to cut power when it reaches its maximum speed? Can someone explain this please? Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the bike which includes the controller? My other alternatives as suggested before are going for a Xipi although it sounds like they may have some build / reliability issues or modifying my Marin Larkspur (700c wheels) with an aftermarket kit. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

How can I speed up my Wisper 905 SE Sport
I don’t have a driving licence due to epilepsy so anything that needs a licence is out. If I can stick with the Wisper and modify it that’s great because it’s as good as new. Another option is to sell the Wisper and buy something like a Xipi Quantum 1,500 watt lithium powered bike which will do in excess of 30 mph off road. If anyone is interested in a Wisper 905 in very good condition then please get in touch as that may help me decide which way to go. Cheers Gordon

How can I speed up my Wisper 905 SE Sport
I have had my Wisper 905SE Sport for a year now and I am fairly happy with it with the one exception that I would like it to go faster on the off-road part of my journey to work. It’s a 37V 14Ah system with the off-road button which takes me up to about 19mph. I am not worried about the range being reduced; I would just like to get the speed up to the mid to late 20’s on battery power. Is there a way to do this by adjusting the controller on the bike? Failing that is there a possibility to fit a different motor and keep the battery and controller? Any thoughts to speed the bike up under battery power greatly appreciated. Cheers Gordon

Boosting the top speed of a Wisper 905se Sport
No the bike is exactly as it came … no additional bits only me. I don’t wear skin tight lycra but I have fairly low drag clothes on. I will try doing a run in each direction to confirm what the speeds are as you suggest. As for the model of the bike, its one of the early 2009 models that came into the country in Jan / Feb. It has the connection box just below the handle bars and the hi / low switch on the left of the handle bars. So this small screw inside the controller box that is located at the end of one of the cable sets coming out of the controller. Can you explain exactly what it does and how you adjust it ….clockwise / anti clockwise? Oh… im in Aberdeen by the way Thanks

Boosting the top speed of a Wisper 905se Sport
OK... so just to confirm, the things i have read about adjusting a screw on a cable somewhere on the bike are not going to help me here is that correct? Can someone explain what this screw does and where it is please? I would also like to decommission my off-road button so that it was fixed in the off-road position.... i have pressed it inadvertently a few times and not realised for a few miles that i am in low speed mode. Can it just be disconnected at the junction box at the front of the bike? I am pretty disappointed about the top speed you can get out of the bike. The suggested unassisted off-road speed is up about 17 / 18 mph as i recall but im not getting anything like that on flat ground (im just over 12 stone by the way). in fact if it wasn’t for the off-road button the bike certainly wouldn’t achieve 14.5 mph unassisted with the throttle fully open.

Boosting the top speed of a Wisper 905se Sport
Tyre pressures are good. I don’t have any concerns about range because I am only looking for about 20 miles before I can recharge again. Rather than range I would like extra speed. Is there anything on the bike I can adjust to increase the level where power assistance drops out? I think it drops out before it should and in any case I would like it to give me assistance up to about 22 mph…how can I do this David? Thanks Gordon. Oh by the way, the computer on the bike works about 70% of the time but it seems to loose the signal… the sensor is as close as possible to the magnet on the spokes and the computer has a clear line of sight to the transmitter… any ideas? Also, what is the circumference that should be entered into the computer for a 2099 model 905se Sport with standard tyres. (just in case you wondered, the speeds im talking about above are all taken from a GPS unit not the bike computer)

Boosting the top speed of a Wisper 905se Sport
Hi folks I recently bought a Wisper 905se Sport, I have covered a couple of hundred miles on it so far and apart from a few minor issues its been pretty good so far. I will do a full report on it in a couple of weeks. Most of my journey to work each day is along a pretty disused road with a great tar surface … I cover about 4 miles on this but I find that the bike isn’t hitting the 18/19mph speed without a fair bit of input from me. I would like to boost the maximum speed of the bike in powered mode above the offroad setting (yes I am aware of the legal issues) … can you tell me if this is possible? Thanks

Looking for new bike..Probably Wisper??... your views please
Well I have gone and done it …ended up buying a Jan / Feb 2009 model Wisper 905se Sport from e-bikes direct. I found that prices for the 905se Sport seemed to range from £1175 to £1393 and of the few models that were available at the moment, one or two were earlier bikes. The differences on the latest model are, all of which I wanted on my bike are: Hi/Low switch on the handle bars added Updated cable connector in front of the handle bars New Headset \Handle bar clamp and Riser handle bars I ended up getting the bike from e-Bikes Direct who were very helpful and their price of £1175 was the best I found. It would have been nice to hang back for one of the new 905se City S bikes in April / March but I really wanted to get mobile now so I have bought the Sport and a set of City mud guards and a City carrier rack and I will have something that will be pretty close to the April 2009 model City S bar the new battery mods. Bike should be here mid week so I am looking forward to it. Will keep you posted with how I get on. Cheers and thanks for the information Gordon

Yep thanks flecc. No doubt it will all become much clearer to me when i know a bit more about it. Main thing is that i know there isn't really a big difference between the Wisper and eZee batteries. Once i get a bike i will be able to sound knowledgable about the battery technology

Right … err..well thanks for that flecc So from what I can gather, both the Wisper and the eZee have equivalent batteries and both are high quality. Guess its just down to getting the right bike now then. Cheers Gordon

Interesting stuff folks, thanks So it looks like the Wisper may be the one to go for then. I believe the 2009 models may not have the offroad switch fitted but they will have all the wiring in place so that you can retro fit it I understand. It seems if the Wisper is built to cope with the offroad capability/additional load ….. not that I would use it unless I was actually “offroad” you understand… then it is a better bet than the eZee Keep the advice coming Thanks Gordon

Poor Excuse
My reason for buying an E-bike is kind of outwith my control. When I was a kid I adored bikes and was never off them but my true passion is cars … in particular Lotus Esprit’s However, I had an epileptic seizure a few years back and the first thing that happens is they stop you driving for a year. I bought a standard bike - Marin Larkspur and found that I got pretty fit in the space of a month but the one thing I hated was that I live at the top of a hill and every time I am out on the bike I know I have a 10 minute hike up a hill at the end of the trip. It’s a real psychological barrier that spoils the experience of cycling. Unfortunately I have had another seizure so the Esprit is back in the garage and I am back to 2 wheels for the next year. With an e-bike I wont have that horrible climb up the hill at the end of the run. I tried cycling to my office the other day and it took about 40 minutes on my normal bike. I recon that I can get that down to 25 minutes on an e-bike, it will get me to work feeling fresher and the best thing about it is… guess how long the journey home would take in a car… about 30 minutes E-bikes … here we come.
