E-bike as mobility aid - advice please
My bike is a chinese folding model with a 250watt motor and a 8ah lithium battery, pedelec only no throttle.I am considering adding a throttle as starting from a dead stop is tough fo me.I am a big guy,125kilo so I added double walled wheels and quality butted spokes (20" wheels ). In quebec the regulations state a motor of no more than 500 watts and a max speed of 32 kmh. Electric scooters without pedels seem to fall under the radar as most are unlicenced in montreal. We have very large hills here as montreal is built around a mountain 1200ft and the rest of the city is near sea level. It is time to pressure law makers to make exemptions with respect to ebikes and people with physical disabilities! I think that larger geared motors should be made available to the disabled who cannot pedal yet still are able to balance and have good eyesight. Perhaps offer tax credits and other incentives to make these bikes more affordable. Regardless of you situation wear a helmet,I fell at a stoplight and and cracked my helmet saving my head from injury.

E-bike as mobility aid - advice please
I read your post with interest because I am in a similar situation.I purchased an electric folding bike in march of this year while I was in relatively good health. My health has deteriated considerably since then,(diabetes and siatica and my left leg is pretty much useless,I walk with a cane and am capable of about 300 meters before I have to sit down. I now consider my ebike as my salvation,I can go just about anywhere in montreal within a 20km radius. I do not have a throttle on my bike and am able to climb many hills hills with minimal pressure on the pedels with ease. My only concern is reliabity as I had a flat 1 km from home and the walk was made acceptable because of the folding pedals, using my bike as a walker. Please consider a folding ebike because if you get stuck you can easily fold your bike and take a taxi. thanks,Jan

speed and battery endurance
I am wondering if going slower will increase the total distance travelled.I know that going 30kmh requires 90% of energy to overcome drag. What are the figures for going 20kmh and will going slower increase total distance travelled for the same battery charge. I love going fast,30kmh but is this hurting my range? thanks,Jan

charging questions
I have a chinese folding ebike with an 8ah lithium manganese battery, with a 250 watt motor. The charger has a 1.8 ah output. This week my battery was very close to being fully discharged and it only took 5 hours to recharge,it usually takes 6-8 hours, 18-22km no throttle. I wonder if The charger had a false peak.I am tempted to charge the battery again to see what happens.Am I looking for trouble or should I go through another complete cycle checking distance? thanks,Jan

cutoff brake levers
Ok,here I am with a new folding bike and realized that I should have electrified my mountain bike. I think I am going to transfer all the electric components to the bigger bike,I am having problems finding 12 gauge spokes for the 20"wheel so I am going to get a 26"wheel built for 12 gauge spokes and electric hub, the longer spokes are easier to find.I have caught a glimpse of myself riding by store windows and at 6'2 275lbs I look silly on the folding bike. Can I eliminate the cutoff brake levers,my mountain bike has integral shifters and brake levers. Thanks,Jan

hub motor question
There are only 2 wires going into the motor,I know because I put a small trailer plug to make the wheel removable. The battery has only 2 contacts on the bottom, and the platform has 2 corresponding spring contacts. Definately no controller. I saw an expoded view of a similar hub on another forum with 3 fets and hall sensors built into the hub. As to the pedelec it is a sealed unit with wires going into the motor. Thanks,Jan

hub motor question
It is called an ebiko,2007,it is pretty much like the 2009 model.I have seen may other similar chinese bikes with a different name..The hub is quite large and very quiet. I assumed the controller was in the hub as well as it is not on the bike. 36 volt lithium ion 8 ah battery,no throttle just the large bottom bracket with the pedelec. Here is the website where I bought it Motion Urbaine | Motocyclettes, vélos, scooters, trottinettes électriques look under inventaire for fb250. And it is a bad thing if I was told it was absolutly brushless. Thanks ,Jan

hub motor question
This may sound like a stupid question but do some brushless motors come with only 2 wires going into the hub? I know that brushless motors require 3 wires, but do some have the controller built into the hub as well? There doesn't appear to be any controller on the bike other than the large bottom bracket pedelec unit. This bike was sold to me as having a brushless motor. Could I add a throttle without too much problems? Thanks,Jan

better gearing for a folding pedelec
Hi,my name is Jan I have a problem with the gearing on my folding bike. this topic may have come up before. The bike is a 6 speed, with a pedelec bottom bracket ,the chainring is not replaceable.I want to pedal at a lower cadence while maintaining a decent speed.the rear freewheel is 14-28 I was thinking of getting a 7 speed freewheel,11-28 but I understand there is a shortage of them.So my option is to bolt a 50 tooth chainring on to my exsisting 44 tooth chainring the bolt pattern is144mm but the holes are to small in the current chainring. CouldI drill the holes out and fasten the 50 tooth chainring?I would no longer have a chain guard as I would be using the holes for the larger chainring
